It depends on what type of paralysis (spinal cord, facial, etc.) If you are referring to spinal cord and physical therapy because most are. There is not treatment that can cure the paralysis. Physical therapy is done to come up with new ways to move around and get back to daily activities. We teach you things pertaining to transfering from wheelchair to floor and back, to the bed, sometimes teaching on assistive devices depending on the upper body strength. With that being said we do keep strengthing the upper body you can never have too much strength when you have a spinal cord injury because your upper body is what gets you more mobile again, and to prevent muscle wasting. The goal of physical therapy is to try to get you as close to where you were before in your everyday life. Hope this has helped.
