If it's hard to talk to him directly, you could try writing a letter. A letter is easier, because not only do you not have to be standing under his gaze the whole time, but he will have to read your entire point before bringing up his own objections.

Consider the use of a mediator.

Example: high school age daughter wanted to move out.

Her church youth director was asked to come over for a chat between student and parents.

result: a compromise and agreement through the last day of school.

Everybody stayed calm and let the youth director lead - there were no hard feelings later.

First some thoughts for you. Be sure you are listening to your dad. Be responsive rather than reactive. Think about ti. You need to listen before you will be heard. You may have to adjust your response to your dad.

Sometimes telling your story in third person helps.
For example say "dad I have a friends dad who is nice but he is narrow minded (looks at fathering through a donut hole)."
Dad how could I help my friend talk to his dad?

At a time when he is not mad or emotional, you could start a conversation like "you know, I really want to have a good relationship with you and I really want to express myself but so many times I think you are not really listening to me. You think you have all the right answers and maybe you do, but wouldn't you like to understand me better? You could if you just allowed me to have my own opinions sometimes. did your parents let you have your own opinions? It would be really good for me to be allowed to think a bit more independently sometimes." Good Luck
