back in the 1970's, Xerox was the first with Xerox PARC. The system developed to the Xerox 1810 in the early 80's.

At that moment, Steve Jobs started Apple computer, together with some Xerox developers. They where the first witg a GUI that resembled the desktop as we know it in a lot of systems.

Around 1985, several corporations started to develop there own system. Atari with their Atari ST, using GEM looked in fact that simular to a Mac that it was called "Poor mens Mac"
Commodore had the Amiga with "Workbench"
And Microsoft started Windows 1.0 but it didn't have a lot of succes. In fact Windows 3.0 was the first system that actually worked good. Serious competition came with Windows 95.

There where even a few others.
NextSTEP, based on the same Unix Kernel as OS X. In fact it was the other way around. That's why OS X is Os X, and not OS 10. (neXtstep -> Mac os X)
There was BEOS, am alternative to OS 9 an Windows. and a few other. So Apple was before Microsoft. but not the first

Apple Mac.

Bill Gates also decided the GUI was the way to go after Mac OS release. After seeing that Apple refused to license the Mac OS, he announced Windows in 1983. During the development of Windows, Bill Gates feared Apple would sue him due to the fact that his OS was looking a lot like the Mac OS. So on November 22, 1983, John Sculley, then CEO of Apple, signed an agreement to allow Microsoft use Mac OS technology in exchange for further development of Microsoft software for the Mac. Windows 1.01 was finally released for use with IBM computers and compatible clones on August 11, 1987. Its arcane interface, built on the cryptic MS-DOS operating system, was almost unusable. With its unsightly tiled windows and lack of icons, it was a large disappointment. Even so, Jobs began to complain about how Microsoft had stolen the Mac OS's interface design to which Bill Gates replied in the March 14, 1989 edition of MacWEEK:

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo"

And the correct answer is MAC.
Apple showed one, Microsoft saw and liked it, produced Windows part of the ol Mac/MS wars. Its a great story really. But Apple Certainly WON the GUI war if first is the criteria.
Actually Xerox had the very first one but didn't ever do anyhthing with it.

Macintosh was the first of those two. But the Apple Lisa was before that in 1983. The first GUI was the Xerox PARC in 1979. The first mac was largely based on PARC.
