For the gatso to 'get' you the cars position on the road at both flashes must be indicated by reference markers (the white lines) to calculate the speed of the vehicle. So in theory the camera could take a piccie of you coming towards it on the wrong side but, with a lack of reference markers in the road, it would be legally impossible to prove your speed.

Gatso cameras take 2 pix and if you challenge the radar reading the speed is calculated by reference to road markings. Generally they take a rear shot and the markings are arranged on the road for this. Truvelo cameras (another yellow box) work the other way and take front pix. Specs (average speed cameras) are set up either way, as are congestion charge cameras.
For the benefit of one of the other answerers gatso is from a Mr. Gatsonides, a Dutch rally driver who developed the first radar cameras.

A "Gatso" is only effective when it can incorporate those painted road markings in the snap. If one has apparently just flashed you, it was probably getting someone going the other way.

It's all going to change soon,
All gatsos are going to be upgraded to super hi tech digital boxes
They are going to fleece the motorist,
I suspect that they will tighten up on it all and allow us the 10% margin and nothing else,
So it's going to be bye bye to my sporty Zetec Si and hello Robin reliant

No it can't - it needs those white marker lines in order to prove the speed (by measuring the distance travelled between the two 'snaps'). That said, ofthen the cameras can be swivelled around - so next time you drive past it could be pointing the other way!

It's true if you face towards them and it flashes - nothing
It has happened to me a few times.
