PN is OK. I've been to Massey University on vacation courses. But John Cleese has a point. PN has either the highest or second highest suicide rate in NZ (Hamilton is a strong contender). In general, places far from the sea have high suicide rates. Last I heard Hungary, a landlocked country, had the highest in the world. I'm surprised that somebody as well-travelled as John Cleese hasn't seen much worse places. Similarly Mick Jagger who said Invercargill is the ******** of the world. The worst places in the world are either in third world or totalitarian countries. Places like Harare, Pyongyang, Port au Prince, Kampala, Yangon, Bhopal and Baghdad. Britain has a few too, like Scunthorpe, Middlesborough, Catford and Bootle.

If you don't live in Palmeston North the fact that John Cleese thinks its the most boring town in the world is kind of funny. (which of course is why he said it)
I think the world would be a much better place if we could all laugh at ourselves more often, instead of taking things so seriously.

Yeah, lol. I read about it yesterday! The article said that whilst the council had not officially authorised or allowed it, it was in no hurry to remove the name! Interesting...I'd be a bit annoyed if someone was paying-out my home town! Maybe Cleese regrets doing it now? lol...

Don't know why he said Palmy is a great place for anyone intending to commit suicide - there are far more depressing places in NZ! Good on the council, they've very tactfully said "Up yours Mr Cleese!"
I grew up in Wanganui - but please don't hold that against me! :o)
Check out tv3's website, they've got the story and loads of people have responded to it.

I think they should invite Cleese to open the thing. He probably would.

Yeah, good on ya, Palmy (and Fred Dagg, whose idea it was, apparently)! Saw it on the News - good to have something to laugh at, for a change!
