OMG! you do not want to go to a tanning bed. When you have a deadly skin cancer you won't be saying that. You will die. 20 minutes in a tanning bed is like 6 hrs. out on the sun lying down! You need 1tsp. of sunblock on every body part visible to be safe for 2 hrs. in the sun! When you have that cancer, there will be this huge red bump wherever you had too much sun, and you will have to get it frozen, and cut off. Then they sew your surrounding skins around the bump. If you don't get it cut off, you will die. Even a little bit of sun can hurt your skin. So, if your friends had a tan, doesn't mean you should. They'll have skin cancer later when their skin can't take much longer, and your going to be the only one healthy, if you listen to me. This is really the whole truth! A doctor came to our school and told us all about it, actually even the doctor has had it and she showed pictures that were very scary. So be careful!
and it won't make you look better, well, it will, for awhile, but not when you have surgery, and have stitches! OUCH!

The newest tanning beds take out the burning rays, and just have tanning rays (UVA). You are right next to the UVA bulbs, so you are getting radiation much faster than you would at the beach. In fact, just a single 15-to-30 minute salon session exposes the body to the same amount of harmful UV light as an entire day at the beach! Since you are not burning, you also get a false sense of security and stay longer, getting even more damaged.
Tanning beds make your skin wrinkled and leathery. They emit mainly UVA radiation, the rays responsible for tanning—not to mention premature skin aging, melanoma and immune system damage.

At 16 I had that glowing youthful boybop image glowing skin. But just 1 year later as a result of going to a tanning salon Not only did I experienece that burning skin smell mentioned in a previous comment but suddenly when I looked in the mirror my skin looked old and leathery (even more so when I smiled) and did not glow and look so youthful anymore! After that day I never went to a tanning salon again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All this damage from just visiting the salon once per week!

yes, tanning beds are significantly worse and increase the risk for skin cancer by a lot, you would be better off tanning in the sun, but don't use a self-tanner/fake tan, you may think it's nasty, but there are fake tans that look just a good, maybe even better than natural tans, and you won't look old when you're in your 30s!

It's much much worse. Your mother is right. SO many women, including teenagers, have gotten skin cancer from tanning beds. Think of it this way, you're zapping yourself with the amount of sun you would normally get in a couple of hours but instead getting it in a couple minutes. Kinda like a microwave vs and oven. And things always cook better in the oven.
Plus, there's a reason tanning beds look like coffins...

I don't have that much information on tanning places, but I think with technology now a days, they can help minimize those bad effects. As oppose to the sun which is unchangeable.
You can always call a tanning salon and ask for more information. They usually have pamphlets in the lobby that might help.

actually, i think tanning beds are better than frying outside in the sun, because your sessions in a tanning bed are limited to a specific amount of time...many people that tan outside underestimate their tolerance to the uv & end up spending way too much time & get burnt!!! of course, uv exposure is bad whether it`s natural or artificial, but i think using a bed is the lesser of two evils!!!
