Are most police (American, anyway) in favor of or against gun control laws?

Like the old saying goes "Outlaw guns and only outlaws have guns".

The law abiding citizens are NOT the ones committing gun crimes. Its the psychos and criminals. And they can get all the guns now... even though they are prohibited because of mental problems or being convicted felons.

I encourage all good citizens to own a gun for home protection.

Gun Control - all 5X...

Seriously, nearly all rank-and-file officers are against gun control (as other posters have pointed out) - and that includes city, county and state agencies.

Those who are FOR gun control are primarily those administrators who are APPOINTED to their jobs (ie, police chiefs appointed/hired by the local city council or equivalent).

To keep their jobs, they need to essentially toe the line mandated by the politicians. The politicians are generally in favor of gun control, as passing laws gives the impression that they are "doing something about the evil guns..." when in reality, it's just a symbolic gesture.

In general, the only officers you see at these gun control media events are those political appointees; they give the impression that, because they show up, the entire department is for gun control - nothing could be further from the truth.

A a LEO, I would rather have honest citizens armed (and able to back me up) than knowing that only the bad guys have guns - which is what happens when they're banned. Ban all firearms - now everyone's considered a bad guy. Require everyone to carry (like Kennesaw, GA) - now the odds are that ANYONE you meet is a good guy.

And don't let the gun control wackos tell you any different.....

I have never met a police officer who was in favor of gun control. Police are aware more than anyone the effects of gun ownership by law abiding, honest citizens more than anyone. I wish that every American citizen who is legally eligible to own a firearm would get one. Crime rates would plummet overnight. Who better to tell how to fight a war than the soldiers on the front line? Who better to know how to reduce crime than the officers on the street?

When I wore a badge the ones I talked to are against it. The politicians masquerading as cops are for it. But the rank and file are against any gun control.

We have more than enough gun control laws on the books .
Now if the politicians would just let us ENFORCE them, we could make your world a lot safer.

It depends. They are like anyone else: if they are educated to the facts, then they will support them. The Constitution guarantees the right to keep and bear arms as a basic right of Americans. There can be no government tyranny if the people of the country are informed and armed.

Here's a question to expand on it.
How many Officers actually want to go house to house and demand a FORMERLY legal gun owners firearms it they are outlawed?
Personally I agree with everybody else on this one. More than enough on the books now, making more won't help. Just enforce the ones we have.

Shoot more and shoot more often.

I think everyone should learn how to safely handle a firearm and if people want to have them more power to ya.

Just don't point it at me because it would most likely be the last thing you do.

Gun control:

Sight picture
Breathing correctly
Squeezing the trigger

I have no problem with people owning weapons.
