Pit Bulls are thought of as dangerous dogs that can turn on you in a minute, right? WRONG!! It's not the dog, but the breeder and owner who make a killer out of these sweet and smart dogs. I'm sadden by how many of you dislike this intellent dog because of it's label. People make dogs bad. Inbreeding and abuse will turn any dog, no matter how gentel into a timebomb waiting to blow. Shame on all of you who believe what the media says about these dogs!
Punish the Deed, NOT the Breed!!

I agree with this totally however some pitbulls do turn on humans BUT NOT ALL!! The reason they do turn is because either it was the breeder, owner, or his natural instincts come out. Origanlly pits were bred to kill bears. So sometimes they do turn but its because of that natural instinct.

I saved a pit pup when it was about 3 days old. It was just laying in my yard (my dogs have been fixed so i knew it wasnt theres! I bottle fed it and constanly looked for its mother but never found her. i had him for 10 beautiful years. He was so well behaved and he was just a big baby! Well one morning it was time to feed him and normally i called his name (he sleept in my home) and he came running up to me, i bent down to rub his belly and out of no where he got up and started to attack me! Thankfully my husband was home and he grabbed the dogs collar but then badger managed to bite his arm. As soon as badger got away from my husbands grip he came charging after me agian but before he could bite me agian my german shepherd got in the middle of us.
After that badger cae to his senses and layed on his belly like nothing had happened. I was scared and shocked but i held onto my shepherds fur because i was so shocked and afraid of what badger would do next.

We took badger to the vet to see what was wrong with him (after me and my husband went to the doctor) we loved this dog so much he was like our son! The vet said nothing at all was wrong with him and he could not find any reason what so ever why he attacked us like he did. The vet was fearful of our saftey and possibly if he managed to escape our property other children saftey and recommeded we put him to sleep, well we didnt and that was our mistake.

The next day he managed to jump our fence and attack a 8 year old child, once agian my german shepherd interveaned before we knew what had happened but sadly that was the end of our beloved shepherd. Badger killed him and was now very hurt from the fight. We called the police to break up the fight because if you know every person will tell you to never break up a dog fight unless you know how and well we didnt know how.

I still dont know why badger acted like that and if you do please tell me, badger was forced to be put to sleep for biting the child thankfully the child wasnt hurt badly. No i am not a bad owner my dogs are my children! But i just wont and cant ever get another pit. But yours may differ so by all means adopt one.

I once had an elderly lady for a friend. She had a wonderful little dog. A mix of some sort. She had the dog trained well and it behaved very well. Learn here https://tr.im/ZN0Vs

She kept an uncovered candy dish on her coffee table with candy in it. The dog was forbidden to eat the candy. When she was in the room observing the dog he did not even appear to notice the candy. One day while she was in her dinning room she happened to look in a mirror and could see her dog in the living room. He did not know he was being watched. For several minutes he was sitting in front of the candy bowl staring at the candy. Finally he reached in and took one. He placed it on the table and stared at it, he woofed at it. He stared some more, licked his chops and PUT IT BACK in the bowl and walked away. Did he want the candy, oh yeah. Did he eat it? Nope. They can be trained that well but most, I'll admit, are not trained that well. When I was a young boy, maybe 5 years old. We had a german shepherd. He was very well trained also. My mom could leave food unattended on the table, no problem. She would open the oven door and set a pan roast beef or roast chicken on the door to cool. No problem. He would not touch it, watched or not. But butter? Whole other story. You leave a stick of butter anywhere he could reach and it was gone. He was a large shepherd so there were not many places he could not reach. Really, I think the number of dogs trained to the point they will leave food alone when not being supervised is very small indeed.
.
Now if we are talking obedience training, not food grubbing, that is a different story. Way back when I was first learning obedience training one of the final exercises was to put our dogs in a down/stay and not only leave the room but leave the building for 15 minutes. The only person that stayed was our trainer, not the owners. Most of the dogs in my class did not break their stay, which would be an automatic fail. I'm happy to report my dog was one of the ones that passed.

I'm scared of pit bulls because of what the media says. I know I shouldn't be but being that I'm under 5 foot and very small I just honestly get scared around bigger dogs that don't seem trained. I don't hate pit bulls, in fact I know plenty of ppl that have one and are friendly so I don't mind being around them but I tend to stay away from pits unless I know they're trained. But the same with other big dogs. I absolutely agree that it is the owners fault and not the dogs. Any breed can be mean if you don't treat the dog right.

Just some amusement for everyone...once my friends pit was with us camping and I was walking with everyone else and the pit was running really fast and he got too close to me and barely nugged my leg. Well being 4 foot 10 about 90lbs. it threw my legs from under me and I went flying! lol...I was fine and I thought it was absolutely hilarous! Couldn't stop laughing on the ground!

Thank you to all you responsible pit owners! The world needs more ppl like you, so I can go flying more often! :) hehe...

While what you say is true that most time, it is the owner/breeder that creates the problem, the breed is naturally aggressive that is built to inflict damage.

While every dog can snap regardless of the breed, not every dog can inflict the same damage.

Sorry, I'm a dog lover but, I do take caution with all dogs but extra caution with certain breeds.

You are absolutely right that it is not the breeds fault. But many times breeders will intentionally breed animals with that are mean to produce offspring who may carry these traits. It's sad that there is a label put on specific breed of dog when many other breeds and dogs can be just as vicious or even more vicious. Owners and the training they receive have a huge impact on how the dog behaves and unfortunately many who fight these dogs or want an "attack dog" or guard dog mistreat them to get the results they want. And low and behold ofcourse the dog turns out viscious and then many of the owners act suprised when one of their dogs attack one of their kids or a neighbor's kid. It is the owner's responsibility to raise a dog correctly, much like a parents responsibility to raise their child. People should not label these dogs but then they should also not be allowed to fall into the wrong hands... I say punish the owners who fight and mistreat their dogs, not the breed itself!

I don't know.. But why does everyone that wants the pitbull to survive.. spend all their time on YA asking why everyone else hates the breed?? They could be out there showing everyone how wonderful the dogs are...

You could be out at the park and letting everyone see how sweet they are.. Or entering temperament tests so that we can see them passing, or you could be doing a number of things that would benefit the reputation. Rather than asking dog people over and over and over again, why they hate pitbulls.. SHOW US WHY WE SHOULDN'T HATE THEM..

Show us that the breeders are breeding for temperament.
Show us that they aren't being fought anymore.
Show us that breeders aren't selling them to people who fight dogs, or drug dealers or people needing protection cause they were foolish..
Show us that they are good with YOUR kids,
Show us that they are the dogs that you keep telling us that they are.

I just heard on the news, 2 pitbulls attacked a little kid.. Heard it minutes ago.. Show us that those things have stopped.. Don't keep asking us why.. Show us why we are wrong.

Amen. Pit Bulls get a bad rap because too many idiots do idiotic things with them and the media reports it.

This only makes the problem worse because idiots watching TV think it's cool and go them one of them there Pit Bulls and treat it like crap and watch is maul someone. Then they get their mulleted self on TV too.

If fact, I've found more little dogs to be aggressive than large breads like Pits, must be a Napoleon complex or something.

At any rate, I think your rant's spot on, bad owners make bad dogs.

In England & the UK, Pits are called "The Nanny" They get a bad rap because of bad breeders and stupid people that get them for pit fights. Did you know that the first American War Hero, a dog, was named Stubby. He was a decorated hero and was also a Pit Bull. The Little Rascals, Petey was a Pit Bull. Helen Keller's beloved seeing eye dog was also a Pit Bull. As with any breed… Pits are not born mean, they are made mean.

Yes... any breed of dog can be vicious depending on the training. In lots of places there is a Pit Bull ban going on. That's totally just unfair.

I completely agree. I myself love dogs, including pit bulls. However, answering your question, I think that for little children they might be scary due to their fast and quick movements, in adition to the fact that they can sometimes be very hurtful. However, if you look inside them, they are really sweet!
