Does being sent to collections automatically do it?

How can I know if I have been given a negative credit report of something?

Wait - my husband just looked it up and we have one - can the collections agency do that while we are disputing the charges? (yes I have given official written notice of dispute)

...and the original landlord never sent us any bills or anything, we just got a notice from collections out of the blue 2 years later.

In order to get to the collection state the lender must contact you when you are late. Then they will report negative to your credit file. They will do so every 30 days. When you get to 120-150 days late the lender will charge off the account as unserviceable and then sell it to a collection agency who will tack on fees and report it as well. so when it has reached this stage your score will have dropped by as much as 150 points or more.

Being sent to coleections negatively impacts your credit. It is bad especially if you apply for a mortgage. Any late payments or judgments, liens are also very negative. You can order one free credit report from each credit reporting agency per year.

Collections, charge-offs, late payments, repossessions, foreclosures, medical bills, tax liens, judgments & defaulted on student loans are a few examples of negative credit.

To find out, go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get a free copy of all three credit bureaus and review them.

You have a lot of missed or late payments; you have anything that was purchased on credit that had to be repossessed; you have a lot of high credit debt that will take years to pay off (outside of mortages)
