My neighbor has two dangerous dogs who bark and seem to want to jump the fence at everyone who walks by the house. I have a 10 year old and I'm scared that these dogs will eventually jump the fence and attack someone. What can I do? I am not sure of their race, but its one of those attack dogs.

God, dog-lovers, I am not familiar with dogs, so please don't be offended by certain terminolog that I use. In spanish, we refer to la raza del perro. I guess its a biligual malfunction, we can't be perfect you know. Thanks to the serious responses.

I would talk to your neighbors first. See if they and their dogs are friendly. Sometimes in that situation, the dogs are just letting you know that your close to their property, but are very friendly once you meet them. I have a small dog the tends to run at people when we're outside and I appologize everytime, cause it scares people, but she really isn't a mean dog and definately isnt a biter. So I encourage them to pet her and get to know her so she wont run at them in the future.
If the owners are unapproachable, and wont talk to you about the dogs I would contact your local authorities about your rights and the laws in your area about threatening dogs.

If you can you should talk to the neighbors. I realize this wont always work, there are just some people that this will cause more problems with-luckily theyre usually easy to spot.
If that isnt an option, or if that doesnt help the situation then call the police about the barking, mention youre afraid of the dogs.
Call Animal Control--it doesnt sound like the dogs are actually doing anything wrong at this point. However if youre that scared then your neighbor needs to be aware of that. If he is a responsible dog owner then he will correct the behavior. If he doesnt, then I would keep a very watchful eye on the dogs since he seems to think it is ok for them to frighten people.

Two of my three dogs (An Australian Shepherd and a Lab mix) snarl and jump at the fence when people walk past because the neighborhood children go out of their way to torment them when I'm not home (or when they think I'm not). These are both very sweet dogs outside my yard. I take all of my dogs regularly to the local leash-free dog park and have never had any aggression issues with them there. The Lab mix is even a registered therapy dog who I often bring to the local children's hospital for visitations.
I mention this only to point out that simply because they are aggressive at the fence, does not make them vicious dogs.
Not knowing what your exact situation is there, however, I do not wish to completely discount your concerns. Unfortunately, there is nothing, legally, that can be done unless the dogs actually hurt someone. Just have your son avoid their territory whenever possible.

talk to your neighbors about it? the police are worthless until something bad actually happens. If they ever get loose, bite someone, etc....make sure to contact animal control and specify that the animals are dangerous. Pretty much there is nothing the owners can do at that point. It's sad in some sense that people abuse these laws that are intended to protect people. However, if these dogs are actually a threat, then you have to do something about it. Maybe you should ask the neighbor to let their dogs get acquainted with you and your son. If you go play with them, they are less likely to act aggressively towards you. Have they ever jumped the fence to your knowledge?

First of all its breed not race but I guess both are the same to people who are closed minded. Have the dogs ever been aggressive to anyone? Have you asked to meet the dogs so they know you and your children. If you are referring to maybe a pitt bull they are people friendly. The media tells us stories to get the ratings and we just automatically believe what we hear. i have 7 Pitts and these dogs are total lovers of humans just not other dogs or animals. It is your neighbors responsibility to be a responsible dog owner. I feel you should go to your neighbor and voice your concerns and see what they have to say. Dogs are not usually aggressive unless the human owner has caused this in which case they should not be allowed to have their dogs if that is the case. Dogs however do have prey drives and can see small kids as prey if they have never been exposed to children. So for your sake and the dogs because the dogs will pay if anything happens not the human owners go and talk with your neighbor.

how high is the fence - if the dog can actually jump over it then talk to your neighbor about a larger fence. If the dogs can't get over it & are just jumping up and barking - they can't get to you or your son so don't worry about it.
PS - don't go to the police before talking to your neighbor. That will only cause more problems for you & your neighbor - gp to him 1st & tell him your concerned. Maybe he will recommend away your son & his dogs can get aquanted & become friends

Privacy fenc is a good idea since they will not be able to see & react to you. Second choice - check with the neibor first but buy a bag of dog biskets. You'll have to THROW one to each of them at first but eventually they are gonna see you (and your son if he helps) as cookie machines and not something to challange. Eventually you can work up to hand feeding them but that will take lots of time..

i have four dogs and when they are in the yard they jump and bark because they are excited. not because they want to attack someone. and if you don't know what kind of dog it is how do you know it's an "attack dog" you do not. as long as they are in a fenced in yard you can not do anything. the owners are doing what they are supposed to. and anytime i have ever walked by a yard with a dog in it the dog jumps up and barks...that's what dogs do.

I don't understand what you mean by "one of those attack dogs." Obviously you aren't too familiar with dogs.
If you feel scared don't walk by the house, try contacting the owner to see if there is anything that can be done.
