When an artist gets to the level of being able to do art work like that, the next level is expressing light. The really great masters used light and contrast to illuminate their subjects in extraordinary ways. The Dutch Masters were examples of that. Contrast this portrait with a portrait done by the french impressionist Renoir.
Also the fabric does not have the shimmering quality you would expect to find. The fingers on the hands are not quite right. When I was a kid growing up in Seattle, the painters of advertising signs would be up on billboards painting by really marvelous realistic art. Being able to paint realistically is not that unusual, and with practice can be learned. But putting passion into the art, designing light, creating a feeling of the moment that transcends time: that is creative genius which this artist has not yet expressed.
P.S. go to www.felixr.com and check out this famous British artist Thierry Poncelet who does oil portrait paintings. Notice the well rendered hands and fabric. Even in these detailed portraits that are quite saterical, light plays a more important position.

I find this painting upsetting. She looks vacant and tired, perhaps something was not going well and it was just a passig mood. Its a beautiful painting and the artist was extremly talented, thanks for sharing it ith me.
