in my church there are youth and older adults, it is a traditonal church so we sing hyms but when my pastor led music he sang some praise songs and the youth we lift our hands which signifies we surrender to him and we know he is bigger than us. But the older adults dont understand that and i dont see why our music is the same as the hyms except its faster and some of the words are changed they are still sung to the same god

I think maybe the adults are not concerned so much with the music but how youth are responding to the new music.
The way that many people react to "praise and worship" music is more like an emotional reaction, rather than a spiritual, and that's not good.
What I mean is, a lot of young people are just carried away on a feeling and so they lift their hands and start swaying and it's not really religiously motivated (even though they say it is).
For traditional Christians, most of whom are older, worship is about glorifying God, it's not about making the people feel good or arousing emotions and lifting hands.
Our emotions are fleeting. True church music should not make us want to dance or sway. Rather, true church music should simply be glorifying to God and asthetically beautiful.
Myself? I prefer chant, the most ancient kind of church music. It can be found not only in Catholic tradition, but Eastern Orthodox and Judaism. This is the type of music Jesus Christ used to praised His Father.

I grew up with hymns and I miss them so much. I love praise songs but there are so many of them and they take so much time to learn because they don't play them often enough. When you know a hymn by heart, you can then start messing around with harmonies and stuff. I am going to a rest home so I can sing the old songs with the old folks there. They usually always know them by heart. When we stand and lift our hands, I always considered it a sacrifice because your legs start to ache and your arms get tired...but you still want to praise God. It shows Him that you love Him and you want to do something to show that. I guess an even better way would be to feed the hungry or something. That's a way to praise Him too. Yeah...Hymns.

I used to not like the hymns, but some more modern writers...Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, etc...have redone the old hymns to make them a little more worshipful. The older generations aren't used to raising their hands in full surrender to God during worship. Don't let them bother you. When you worship you should have your heart & mind focused on Him. Wash the other thoughts out of your mind. You will feel His Spirit. It's the best feeling ever!

I really love and enjoy the praise songs. But I also love the hymns. We sing 99% praise songs. Maybe the pianist will play a hymn during the offering, but that's about. The great hymns of the church are powerful, and I really miss them, but I have nothing against the priase songs. I enjoy worshipping the Lord by closing my eyes and lifting my hands and singing directly to Him.
P.S.
More power to you & your youth group!
Those folks in the youth group will be the church leaders of tomorrow. We have a great youth group at our church too!

Here are my thoughts on the matter. Worship is worship. John said that God is looking for worshipers that will worship Him in spirit and in truth. I am not an oridinary teen I love the hymns. Todays music rarely mentions the cross or the blood and that is what its all about.
In Jesus Name
