My car was hit in a parking lot the other day when I was not arround. When I saw what happened, I just drove home because I was in a hurry. If I try to get it fixed with my insurance agency, do I need a police report, or do they just take my word on what happened?

In the US (you didn't say) the answer is no. After all the police report would just say that they saw your car in a parking lot with a lot of dents and then include your statement. THat is, essentially what the insurance claim will do also.

Next time.. if you have a camera phone (and who doesn't now adays) take a LOT of photos of the site. You may or may not need them. Include photos of the license plates of adjacent cars - they may have seen something when they parked.

You can always erase the photos, but you can never recapture the information if you don' t have them. NO camera phone?... toss a disposable one in the glove next to your insurance documents - better still create a small accident kit and carry it in your trunk (insurance doc.s, camera, flashlight, flares, etc..)

Ok.. back to your problem.. call up your insurance company and tell them what happened. If you have coverage they will process a claim for you.. Yep.. they will take your word unless you do this a lot.

good luck...

Due to the high increase in Insurance Fraud, MOST companies will make you file a report on a "Hit and Run" accident. A few companies don't care since it would be under your COLLISION coverage minus your deductible.
You can still file a report even though you moved the auto. Just call your local police and they most likely will have you stop in to file out a counter report. BE SURE to ask for a copy or you'll be waiting forever to get a copy to the company...this will guarantee a delay in payout. JUST for a reference, you may get an estimate to see if the damage is under your deductible amount on collision. If so, don't bother turning it in. It'll just put a mark on your record with the company.

You don't need a police report for a "parked and unoccupied" collision. If you were on private property (grocery store, Home Depot, ect.) the police probably wouldn't have come for a non-injury accident anyway. As long as you have collision or comprehensive coverage(depending on where you live) you should be good to go.

You do not need a police report. They won't do one on private property anyway. You are going to have to pay for it regardless since you don't know who hit you.

call your insurance company and usually if it seems to be under a certain amount there are collision estimate places that you drive to and out for an estimate.
