I have a 14 month old Australian Sheherd. My roommate just got a small kitten. How do we make them be friends? My dog seems like she wants to play but is VERY rough. If the kitten gets near her she licks it all over and knocks it down with her paws. The kitten has no fear of dogs as it lived with one before we got him. My dog acts very excited and focussed when the kitty is in the room. She whines and twitches and watches it carefully. I have kept her on a leash when the kitty is out and kept the kitty in a different room when I can not do this. It has only been 2 days, but we won't be able to do this forever! Anyone have any advise on how to get the dog to leave the kitty alone, or at least play nice? If you have successfully done this how long did it take?

It sounds like your dogs is friendly with the kitten, just a little rough because of her size and because she's excited.

You did a smart thing to keep her on a leash for the first few introductions.

Keep the dog and the kitty separated when you are not home. And keep a close eye on them when you are home. Give your dog some treats whenever she is gentle with he kitten or leaves him alone. This will teach her what the right thing to do is. It will take some time for them to become used to each other. Just be patient and keep a close eye on them.

just raise the little kitten around the dog and it will get used to it. if it spends time with dogs as it is growing up the cat will always like it if it is nice. i have several kitties which are friends with neighbour dogs and they like each because they
have been friends and known each other for years, just be aware that it will take some time, but it will happen. GOODLUCK!!!!
oh yeah, if it is a BIG or VERY aggressive dog, make sure you have it on a leash on it to protect the kitten

wait for the kitten to become a bit older with that size dog it could easily snap its neck so make sure it is old enough to defend itself
my sister has three siberian huskies and *had* a young siamese kitten
it was injured so bad by the huskies (was two at the time) that they had to put it down
she now has three huskies and a baby kitten they, at the moment are keeping it in a seperate room until it gets bigger and then they will start introductions
but other wise make sur eyou have an eye on the two animals at all times
never leave them alone together that is just asking for trouble

If the dog is continuously kept away he is going to remain in the same "Eager to meet and play with this new smell" state of mind. You treat your dog the same way you would if it were a baby, or a smaller dog. Teach him a code word like "gentle" or "easy"--whichever is normal for you to say.

Watch him play with the kitty and if he starts to get too hyper, tell him easy and jerk his leash. But for the most part you have to let them discover each other. Soon he will not be excited b/c it will just be the same ol same ol, but for now this is new and exciting so of course he is going to be a lil overexuberant. You just have to teach him new rules--we must be gentle with the lil kitty. He'll learn b/c he wants to get to see and play with it. If he isn't, he gets taken away from her.

Same way you teach them anything else--a dog can be taught patience and gentleness.

Have something( possibly a blanket)with the cats scent on it around the dog as much as possible. Introduce them in short amounts of time, extending from 15 seconds to several minutes. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats that sleep together. It took a while, but they are all buddies now.

the thank you to introduce a kitten to a dogs is to place the cat in a service so it is going to sense secure. save a hire on the dogs to verify it would not get out of hand and enable them to look at one yet another throughout the time of the door. as quickly as the cat is familiar with the dogs won't have the ability to get to it, it extremely is going to be extra possibly to look at and sniff the dogs. save the 1st pass to short to in keeping with risk 10 min. then permit the cat relax faraway from the dogs. Slowly strengthen the time collectively till they are the two showing they are soft with one yet another. =]

You can't MAKE them be friends. Either they will get used to one another being around or they won't.

Hope you don't have expensive curtains!
