well, it really doesn't make sense, and there is no good explaination! why do we also say we're taking the bus...we're not taking anything...we could say we're riding on it, but we're not...we're riding in it...English is a strange language. Perhaps they should jsut say they're maticating their last piece, but who talks like that anyway?! Sorry this isn't any help...like I said there is no explaination other than that English has a lot of wierd aspects.

Well, I have a low opinion of gum chewing. I think it is because they aren't very bright.

It's just a manner of speech. Another example might be something like " I flew to Hawaii on vacation" ......well as far as I know we don't have wings like a bird...therefore that person flew on a plane......it's just a manner of speech nothing more. Got it?

Because, once you chew it, it is no longer good. Only differecne from eating it is.. instead of swallowing it you throw it away.
