I live in Toledo, Ohio and it seems that on my way home from work I always get stuck behind a car that is burning oil, or has some disgustion black smoke coming out of its exhaust pipe. It smells horrible and can not be good for the environment. What can I do? If I report them to the police or the EPA, will they do anything about it?

You probably can't do much about what they do, but you can reduce your own. Try carpooling, public transportation, or walking when you can.

To protect the earth from global warming, you should congratulate that person.

He is helping the environment 2 fold.
1) The black sooty pollution is contributing to haze which is blocking solar radiation.
2) His exhaust is in particulate form which means his combustion is not efficient and not producing CO2( a green house gas) thereby not contributing to global warming.

Buy American! We have been shipping so many jobs overseas that fewer and fewer U.S. citizens have jobs that allow them to buy decent cars. There is a certain synergy to everything that goes on.If you buy a Prius, that does not make you an environmentalist. When you send your money to Japan, you take a job from an autoworker,an auto parts worker, and a waitress who works in the restaurant across the street from the plant. You also take jobs from the people who provide services to the people who have lost their jobs.Think before you buy.Do not think that you are getting a bargain by sending money overseas that you will never see again.

You should try to start a program were you give tips to people about how to not pollute. If not contact a big environment organization to help your city.

To offset this gross display of pollution, you could go home and not drive for 7 days. That should do it.

It could be that the car in front of you hasn't had a smog test for tons of years!

there is little you can do about the emissions of others. just try to do your part to make it better in hopes of canceling them out.
