Really, it's not about calories when you're talking about a minimum needed for health... it's nutrients you should be concerned about. 1200 calories of junk food may not cause weight gain (if that's ALL you ate in a day) but it certainly cannot be considered a healthy 1200 calories. So, in order to get the necessary NUTRIENTS for health (there are six: carbohydrate, fat, protein, minerals, vitamins, and water), you need a variety of foods... 1200 calories is just about the lower limit to do that. Less than 1200 and you can't get all of the nutrients your body requires each day.
