It means that eternal salvation is simple; confess and beleive. God is not as complicated as people make Him out to be.

Romans 10:9 tells us how we can be saved. The simplicity of the verse is profound. When I confess, utter, "Lord, Jesus", I have actually opened the door of my heart to receive God's salvation. I acknowledge in my speaking that I am no longer the Lord of my life, and I by faith accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and my Savior. The words of my mouth have allowed God to enter into my being and I am "born again". I have become a child of God.

Romans 10:9 means many things to me: 1. You can't be saved in the Christian sense if you don't confess Jesus Christ as YOUR Lord and saviour. Anyone can say "Jesus is LORD", but until you can honestly say "Jesus is MY LORD", then you aren't truly saved. 2. You've got to believe that Jesus was raised from the dead - if you think Jesus is dead, then He can't be your saviour because you can't (shouldn't) serve a dead god. So for ME, Romans 10:9 is my assurance of salvation because I confess for others (the whole world - or anyone reading this on Yahoo! Answers) to hear that Jesus is MY LORD, and I honestly believe that He is risen from the dead and is alive today.

Hope this helps!

Romans 10:9
"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." It means just what it says- if we confess that Jesus is Lord, and our hearts believe that Jesus is risen we are saved. I think it is a great example of the fact that nothing we can do will save us!!

For the benefit of those who don't want to look it up: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

This is one of the key passages in the faith vs. works debate. It seems to suggest that what you do -- your good works, or for that matter your sins -- is not significant. Only what you believe is important.

The problem with this, as I see it, is that one cannot simply DECIDE to believe, make an act of will and believe. The red queen said she worked on believing "six impossible things before breakfast," but I have not made such a practice. If I cannot believe something, then I cannot. And I do not see why I should believe that this passage is necessarily true if I do not have any interest in believing the required dogma.

But then, I don't really care what is meant by "saved," in this context, anyway. And I don't believe a loving god would make such mind-bending conditions for the difference between eternal bliss and eternal torture.

When the new testament christians confessed Jesus as Lord it was much more than the weak confessions we witness today where there is little inner heart change. A profession of belief alone will not stand on Judgement day.

10:9 are pretty even odds, so it means that I probably won't bother to lay a bet, either for or against the Romans.

First, that it should stand with verse 10.

Second, that it should stand with the rest of the Bible.

Third, that whole part about "If you confess with your mouth..." always makes me think of my old mentor. Obviously, if you don't have a mouth for some reason, it looks like you're out of luck if you just stand on this passage. That's why context context context is oh-so-important. Being saved means having a new "wanter" and being born of God. Again. Granted, you must "Believe in your heart..." but until God Himself shows you grace and mercy, you CANNOT will yourself salvation. Look around--man cannot save himself.

Well, it means exactly what it says. If we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord, we will be saved.
