Both are narcotics prescribed for moderate to severe pain relief. Both are highly addictive. Both are commonly abused.
Both are derivatives from the opium plant, and are synthesized from "thebaine", which is an opiate alkaloid...similar in chemical composition to codiene, morphine, etc. (other opiates)

The difference between the two is a slight change in the chemical structure. The effects are pretty much identical, although oxymorphone has stronger narcotic effects, and therefore is prescribed in smaller milligrams. Both are significantly stronger than morphine, mg. per mg.

Oxymorphone is found in the drug "numorphan" and is less common that oxycodone, which is found in brand name drugs such as "oxycontin", "percodan", "percoset", "oxy-IR", and "tylox".
