As you've already heard, the most likely cause of pain with urination is a urinary tract infection, which is usually easily treated with oral antibiotics. However, if left untreated, it could cause severe problems, including kidney damage, sepsis, and even death. The wisest thing to do is see a doctor and get a simple urine test which will demonstrate the presence of infection.

There are other causes for pain with urination, such as urethral trauma, stones, and more commonly, STD's. You should however notice other symtoms with these, such as blood in urine, extreme low back pain, or purulent discharge.

Either way, your best bet is to get it professionally diagnosed and properly treated.

Probably a UTI, does it feel like you have to go and when you try nothing comes out and it's painful. A dr can give you antibiotics but I find that the best remedy is to go & buy a bottle of northland cranberry juice and drink the whole thing throughout the day. You should start to feel better in a few hours. (northland is the only one I know of that is 100% juice)
