We live in an apartment building, (never have before) and the upstairs neighbour plays loud music. It's hard to complain to management because she'll play 2-3 songs really loud and then turn it down and then it will start again when, I guess a song comes on she enjoys. A couple of weeks ago my husband and I hooked up our stereo and blasted ACDC until unfortunately the cops came. (We shook her world old school) Do I need to move into the wilderness to get peace and quiet? I've heard more top 40 than I have ever cared to.

Call the cops on your neighbors everytime they do it. Eventually the landlord will kick them out or the police will start arresting people. You have it lucky, I have neighbors that have 6 dogs, 3 cats 2 ferrets and 5 people living in a townhouse next to me...... imagin the noise and smell that comes from over there.

Why not communicate? Do you know that she was the one that called the police? Tell her that you know it was a less than mature way to get her attention and obviously it didn't achieve what you had hoped, but the volume at which she plays some of her music is really unpleasant and you would appreciate it if she would keep it down even on the songs she enjoys most. You can say that you understand that she enjoys her music, but unfortunately the walls are thin and not everyone has the same taste or chooses to listen to music at the same time. Perhaps she can DJ a complex party? :-)

People say to communicate with them, I have tried this with my very noisy neighbour (they play loud music at 8am on a Saturday morning) and after politely asking them to turn it down I was told to "F++K off" so talking to them does not always work, and I would advise avoiding confrontation in case they turn aggressive, people get killed over things like this. We have written to the managing agent for the building, they will send a letter out to say the neighbours have complained about the noise level and hopefully that will solve the problem, if not the next step is reporting them to the council.

Call the cops on her whenever she does it as a last resort but as a first step write her a letter or go over and let her know how you feel about it.

First you need to write a letter to your landlord or tenant board, they should handle the problem. If that doesnt work though you will have to call the police. My guess is that it wasnt her that called on you when you retaliated, it was your OTHER neighbors who you were being disprespectful to.
