Most people don't want to read stories where the bad guys win, primarily. It won't sell. Also, authors spend a lot of time working on their stories and want to pass on some theme or moral lesson, and that's easier to do if you have one character represent the good and another represent the bad. If you're interested in the bad guy winning, I say to move out of the genre fiction arena and get into places where good and bad are a little more ambiguous, as are winning and losing. Look at Cormac McCarthy's The Road, or even Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, for instance. Mostly, I wanted to write this to clear up a common misconception/misinterpretation some people have. The person above me wrote that in Taxi Driver, Bickle is rewarded. The end is actually a coma-fantasy he had before his death. EDIT: @tt("t) IZK Of the other movies you listed, I've only seen Pulp Fiction and The Italian Job, and I don't remember The Italian Job too well. As far as Pulp Fiction goes, though, I see where your coming from, but remember that Vincent gets killed and Jules finds God (is redeemed), Marsellus gets... well, we all know... it's implied that the two robbers are redeemed in some way, and Marsellus' wife ODs. None of these are what you might call 'getting away with it.' It just depends on what you consider 'success' versus 'failure.' With what I remember about The Italian Job, it's the question of who is the hero. You mentioned this in your answer, and it's just moral ambiguity, not much punishment vs reward. All that said, I didn't mean any disrespect. This is the internet and things tend to come out that way from time to time, but I don't know you, why would I want to get in your grill?

Um yeah the Iron Eagle flicks have gotta be the worst, to keep it simple we'll go with the first 2. Bad editing if you notice the weapons on the wings don't match up with what is being shown in the cockpit. Bad vismods, you really think I'm going to fall for an F-4 being called a Mig? Or and M113 as a BMP? Don't think so. At least Red Dawn had realistic looking Soviet vehicles (don't get me wrong I love that movie, but you know it was Reagan era propeganda).

"In the Army Now" with Pauly Shore and Andy Dick.
"Bones and Jack are two guys with very little going right in their lives. The two decide to join the Army as part of the water purification team and eventually find themselves on the front lines in the conflict between the northern African countries of Chad and Libya. The two men, along with a few companions, have it upon themselves to save the day in combat, something they know little about."

Wow. You hit the nail on the head with Iron Eagle. I remember thinking that it was hokey even when it first came out. I liked the movie when it first came out, though... just because the kid was cute... and I was a teenage girl. hehe
My least favorite is FireBirds with Nicholas Cage. It was filmed on our flightline... but that is about where the realism ended. hokey hokey hokey!

Apocalypse Now
Iron Eagle was done as entertainment, however absurd it was. Apocalypse Now, on the other hand, was Coppolla's attempt at depicting a war he had absolutely no knowledge of or support for. Total BS.

There is that movie about those snipers, I can't remember the name but boy was it boring.
Other than that, your Rambo movies are pretty bad for realistic thinkers.
