The EU is mainly financial. Each country has there own standing army. There is no reason to have one EU based army. There would be to many conflicts of interest/

It would really simplify the military budgets for the countries involved as it would be a transfer of funds to the central organization. It would then worry about the equipment, deployment, updating and other such costs. The combined forces from all those countries would make a formidable military once things got straightened out.

Contracts awarded by such a huge organization would be absolutely massive and would guarantee employment in the businesses chosen for years.

Bad part is the loss of each country to defend it self and make the decision on deployment of their troops. One member of the EU would be contributing a large amount and another that over the last 50 years has been more of an outsider militarily would have to see a different path for its military industry.

It would cost a lot to standardize all the equipment (would take a lot of time).

Wow the ramifications of such a thing!

No, not a good idea at all. All European countries are still very nationalistic to this day. That's a lot of pride and will always lead to war. Need to have your own homeland security especially in that region where there have been more wars than all the othere continents put together. The Euro as currency is good enough which they have disagreements over. United Nations is fine, but let them keep their own armies.

Although the EU has a common monetary system, the member countries are still. very diverse and disagree on major issues when it comes to employing military presence to support UN Resolutions and the War on Terror and I'm sure many other issues. Unless they meld into a cohesive society that can accept one ruling entity, sustaining a leadership role over a single military force would be near impossible. As it is now the head of the EU is passed from country to country every few months.

No, it shouldn't. The EU was formed to compete in the finacial markets and was never intended to imply political cohesiveness. There would be no way to get all the nations to agree on an issue and when to use the army. Look at the differences in opinion in the EU on Iraq, Bosnia, Darfur, ect.....
Each nation has to remain independant in that regard, and do what it deems best for the safety and protection of it's own Citizens.

Not possible, four of the nations are neutral by constitution or internationally recognised policy. Ireland, Sweden, Austria and Finland are all neutral and Ireland is particularly attached to neutrality. Ireland rejected the Nice Treaty so it would include a section ensuring Irish neutrality.

Yes, and the sooner the better.
America has spent billions of it's citizens' taxes protecting Europe and now it's time for Europe to protect itself.
Why do you think European countries spend so much on health care? It's because they spend so little on their minimalistic military.
The sooner America can pull out of Europe the better for all concerned.

absolutely not...
I don't think people in the EU would be comfortable with that... there are already UN peacekeeping forces, there are the NATO forces... I don't even see a need for it some sort of EU army...
... the NATO forces train together on regular basis anyway...

What good would it be having an army that could never be used?
