Wouldn't it be more effective to speak from your heart or personal experience...

It looks rather odd when someone asks a question about belief...professing not to believe in God or the Bible...and then someone cuts and pastes memorized Sunday school verses, which they have learned to regurgitate just for the occasion.

I think it would be more effective to give a postivie answer from one's heart...so, why only use scripture?

I agree with you. There are those who only use scripture and ignore God and their heart.

If I know I'm conversing with a person that does not believe the Bible it is hard to use it as an authority they will accept. That is something I would like to address with them, I'd like to share the reasons for my belief in the Bible with them.

However, if, in this setting of this forum such a person raises a question that invites me to express my belief, then I am compelled to give the scriptural reason for it. At very least they see I have a basis which I consider to be an authority for my belief and that I have given it carefull thought.

Also I do not underestimate the power of the Bible to touch peoples hearts - I see it all the time!

I deeply desire people to find the truth about God. My own expressions of conviction are important but can only go so far. I as a minister don't want anyone to follow me I want people to follow the Bible and follow Jesus. Jesus said that right hearted ones would recognize his voice and respond, so I always put the focus on the Bible.

The Bible can not be used as freely with someone that does not believe it as someone that does. When someone does not believe the Bible it is not sufficient to just rattle off scriptures at them, first they need to be given reason to believe it.

If however a persons objective for answering is to give their reasons for belief (in line with the question), then the questioner should be able to respect that the answerers basis is a book they consider an authority on the matter.

That is a fairly easy question to answer. The Bible is the authority because it is the Word of God. When we answer with the Word of God we are really answering from personal experience, in that we follow it, or at least pray that we follow it. No let me change that, we follow Jesus- the Bible points to Jesus, so how can someone who is a believer not go to scripture. Yes we can speak from the heart, but the heart is deceitful above all else, unless Jesus has cleansed it- that is from personal experience, not just words that I have read.

Most people who quote the Bible are complete idiots who think that it will make them look smart or have had the verses drilled into them, otherwise, they are most likely trying to deceive those who would view the Bible backing them as making them infallible. Anyone can quote the Bible to prove or disprove any point if they take the time to look through it (or hear it from somewhere else). This is because the Bible was not designed for the purpose of refuting or supporting.

Any scripture given is the same as speaking from the heart and more.....it is the basis for our beliefs, the source of our beliefs and we are in agreement with it. If we answer a question, we are bound to answer honestly.... if honestly, we are bound to answer with our belief.....if our belief, we are bound to quote the source. This is our personal experience, the God of the Holy Bible. Any answer we would give reflects what we learn from God's Word. You can't separate the Word from the Christian......it's the nature of the beast.

The reason is this:

The Bible is God's speaking. When God speaks, it cuts through everything. In my own words I'm answering your question. It may not be the answer one is looking for or appreciates, but it remains the infallible Word of God. It pierces the darkness of our soul and when it does, we shall never forget the experience. It is the highest of all answers and in it lies the light for our path. In it lies the the keeping power for our not sinning against God.

I am a Christian and i can tell what you mean by that. most Christians are trying to get the point across, and they feel so passionately about it that that's how they do it. but one reason is because after all the years after it has been written it is still the top selling book in the world. we get our answers from there and we want others to see that no matter what your question is, it will be in there if you want to find it and if you are looking for it.

The have little heart and no personal experience except what they have made up. They have faith which means they have to point to something and that something is the bible, even though it has been proven as false.
