Visa to visit Canada?

I'm a US citizen, considering driving to Canada from Washington DC this summer.

What documentation do I need to enter/exit Canada and what's the best route to take?

For driving between the nations if you are a US or Canadian Citizen, you need proof of ID (i.e. an official government picture ID like a drivers' license) and proof of citizenship, generally a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, proof of birth abroad, etc.

A passport is required for air and sea travel, but not for land until January 1, 2008. I'm including the link to the US State Department's web site. You should be able to find the regulation there if you want to double check.

How you cross depends on where you are coming from, and where you are going to. This is a big border. Three good crossings I know of are just east of Lake Ontario, in the Thousand Islands area, at Niagara Falls, west of lake Ontario, and around the west end of Lake Superior (to go up near Thunder Bay). But again, it depends on where you are trying to get to.

If you are driving between the USA and Canada, a photo ID such as a drivers license would be needed. Passports will be required as of January 2008. Flying into Canada and then back home to the USA, you would need a passport.

US citizens have never required a visa for tourist related visits. A work visa maybe if you are going to work.

A passport is required if you fly, and will be needed starting next year for all entries.

Right now you can drive in with your drivers license and birth certificate.

The route would depend where in Canada you want to go and what you want to do there. Quebec or Ontario, or someplace else? Here are mapquest links with suggestions.

It was that you only needed your ID. But now with the new travel policies I think you need a Passport. Your local Post Office will have the applications.
