how can you tell whether a hamster is a boy or a girl?

If you're not sure, then you more than likely have a female...males have VERY prominant testicles...

If they are very young...you can tell by the distance between the 2 holes...
A femals has 2 very close holes...less than 1/4 inch apart....you usually can't see space between them...
Males have a space between their anas and penis...usually about 1/4 to 1/2 inch...
Females also have nipples...as males will not...

Girls private parts are farther apart. Compare and then you can figure it out. If they are very young it is hard to tell.

If you want to breed them, they should be at least 6 months old. When breeding, once the lady is pregnant, remove the male from the cage. He will eat the babies.

Two females can get along together, but two males will not. They will try to kill each other.
