a song that's a little more upbeat would probably be the best but any song will work.

Christmas carols are good, but you can't really sing "Silent Night" in the middle of July. Lucky for you, there are a ton of religious songs (or songs that could have religious meanings). Some possible songs could be:
"You Raise Me Up" (Josh Groban)
"Wind Beneath My Wings" (Bette Midler)
"Always There" (Secret Gardens)
"Above All" (Lot's of recordings)
"Bless the Broken Road" (Rascal Flatts)
"Bridge Over Troubled Waters" (Simon and Garfunkel)
And there are tons more. Just Google "Inspirational Songs for a person with a mid to high range" (without the quotes. Good Luck!

Well, not any song. I mean you don't want to sing "Baby Got BAck" in church, right?

Christmas carols are the best for beginners. Next look at some of the better known hymns in your church. Get an accompanist to lay down a practice track (play the accompaniment while you record it) and then practice. The audience in a church is a captive audience and as long as you do a fair job in performance, they will enjoy it.

When in doubt, go to your musical director and say to him/her exactly what you said to us. They can help you find the right song and even get you a time to sing it.

I would suggest a song called " Why Me" which was recorded by Kris Kristofferson. Isn't quite as upbeat as you may like but has meaningful lyrics that might go well.

Personally I don't know much about voice and tone range, but my favorite is "I could only imagine".
