I am a schizophrenic paranoid by diagnosis. I was diagnosed as such over 40 years ago and have been an inpatient or outpatient under psychiatric care since then. I have been able to live a fairly normal life, working full time for over 15 years of that time and attending two universities. I attribute this to both medications, which seem to relieve hallucinations but are not a silver bullet, and TLC.
Schizophrenia is not a single disorder but a spectrum of disorders. Its cause is not really known. There is widespread misunderstanding of the disease and much stigma attached to having been diagnosed as such. If you are truly interested in the disorder, type "schizophrenia" into Yahoo! search and a number of links will come up. Wikipedia has a good summary of the disorder(s).
Good health, good luck in your search, peace and love!

Schizophrenia is a mental helath disorder that affects over a million people. It has an onset in the later teens to mid-20s. It is often first diagnosed when a person goes off to college. The stressors of college can exacerbate the symptoms of schizophrenia and a person can have their first "psychotic break". People with schizophrenia often hear voices, see things that arn't there (delusions/hallucinations). There are several different types of scizophrenia. The most diagnosed kind is paranoid schizophrenia were the person is hearing voices that are telling him that he isn't safe, people will hurt him, etc.
There are many medications that are prescribed for schizophrenia. If the patient takes the right one, they can be close to symptom free. Schizophrenia is a life long disorder that most likely will always need to be medicated
Hope this helps!
