Joshua, is the shortened form of Jehoshua. (or Yeshua and Yehoshua)
This Hebrew name does not mean 'God is Salvation' as some have claimed.
Elisha and Elishua are the Hebrew names that mean 'God is Salvation'.
Joshua and Jehoshua mean in English 'Jehovah is Salvation'.

Josh'ua is a shortened form of Jehoshua meaning "Jehovah is Salvation".
The scriptures portray Joshua as a bold and fearless leader, one who was confident in the certainty of Jehovah's (God's) promises. He was obedient to divine direction and determined to serve Jehovah in faithfulness. His original name was Hoshea, but Moses called him Joshua or Jehoshua. (Nu 13:8,16).

According to my OXFORD NIV SCOFIELD STUDY BIBLE, Joshua (MEANING: Jehovah-Savior[ in italics, but I can't represent *that* here on my computer)].
"Joshua fit the battle of Jericho, and the walls came tumbling down!" You'll find his story in the sixth book of the Old Testament, the Book of Joshua. I would suggest you read it; you might find it interesting!

We named our 2nd son Joshua because it's a cool 'J' name. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion, at least for us.
