Mono is caused by the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) which is part of the herpesvirus family. The Center for Disease Control estimates that as many as 95% of adults have been exposed to the virus.
When a person is exposed in childhood, the resulting illness is similar to any of the various childhood illnesses, and is easily recovered from in a few days. It's generally an unremarkable event. When a person is exposed to the virus as an adolescent or teen, 35% to 50% of the time the result is infectious mononucleosis (Mono). This is characterized by a certin set of symptoms (fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands) that usually resolve in 1-2 months. Very rarely, there can be some serious heart, spleen, liver or central nervous system involvement but it is almost never fatal.
Once a person has been exposed, the virus remains dormant in their body for the rest of their life. It can be transmitted through saliva or blood, which is why most adults have been exposed sometime during their life. There are some rare adult diseases that are believed to be associated with EBV, but it is not believed, nor has it been proven to be the sole cause.
So, Mono is viral, not bacterial. It is almost never fatal, but it can be quite uncomfortable for as much as a month or two.

She is not lying to get attention. I had mono while in my 20's. It is no fun. I was so tired for months. I had a terrible headache for about 2 weeks when I first got mono. My neck hurt and I basically felt terrible. I would put supper on and then go lay down for a while. I would just tire out so easily. I started taking a lot of vitamin and mineral supplements. It was a year before I finally starting feeling good again. Try to be understanding. If you ever have it, you will want folks to understand what you are going through.

She most definately will not DIE. Mono is sometimes considered the "kissing disease" because a lot of people get it from the switching of saliva, by sharing drinks or however. I had mono when I was in high school and while mine was a very bad case, it was because my immune system is low. All of my best friends had it (we were going through a wild phase, forgive me) and most of them just took a lot of naps and were generally sick for a while. I had such a hard time though, I became dehydrated because of it and ended up in the hospital and then in the bed for weeks. I just would wait and see about your friend. Im sure under normal circumstances, mono is NO BIGGIE.
Check this out for more info & tell your friend GET WELL SOON!

You don't know you have mono unless you go to the dr for one. It's not something you can just guess and say you have. You can get mono other ways than kissing someone. I got mono before I ever had my first kiss. You can cough on someone and give them mono. It's passed by saliva and mucus. You could drink after someone and get mono.

mono is a viral infection, so of course it is non bacterial. She may want to die, it's a miserable illness, but most people recover just fine. It can take many weeks of rest to recover from it. This site will give you good information on mono.

im always scared that i have mono. if your glands are swollen in your neck, sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite, swollen spleen and fever is a big one. you can only catch it by swapping spit, and it is in your blood, not bacterial. your friends is not going to die unless some rare case of her having a wierd immune system or aids or something. her spleen could rupture but thats only if she hits it in a sport or something, so i think all you have to worry about is not drinking out of her drink, and wonder about the other stuff she has lied to you about. haha

She may feel like she's dying some days but if she's under the care of her doctor and takes it easy she should recover just fine. Cut her some slack she is sick with a virus but she may need a little more TLC - tell her she isn't dying - and if she rests she'll be her old self soon.
