i have a 1986 ford f-250 and i need to replace the springs in the back drums

Well, there are 2 springs at the topsides of the shoes, these are the return springs and pull the shoes away from the drum when you release the brake pedal. Then theres 2 little springs holding the brake shoes on, these make sure the shoes stay up against the backing plate where they belong. then theres a spring at the bottom of the shoes keeping them held snug into the autoadjuster. PLEASE go to the local auto-parts store and buy the proper tools as the standard backyard mechainc with a big pair of pliers ALWAYS ends up with scraped hands, I saw one guy with a full blown racoon face and a broken nose after he punched himself because his vice-grips he was pulling on slipped off the spring, allowing 280 lbs of grunt and pull tugging to come flying at him.

Its just like doing a break job When you get The brakes apart and when you put them back together put your new springs in it and your set. good luck

you have the brake shoes?
you need a hardware kit.

It will have all the springs/clips and fasteners in there for ya
