Which of these two agencies actually gives the more accurate crash test results? NHTSA rated my car with 4 and 5 stars (good and excellent) all the way around, while IIHS rated the exact same car acceptable and poor in similar crash tests. Who should I believe...or which agency's results are more accurate?

The testing regimen is different for both organizations. The IIHS testing is more rigorous and leans closer to "real world" conditions. In both cases, consider the relative ratings of vehicles when making a comparison within the testing reimen.

Don't compare between the two testing regimens as they are NOT the same. The IIHS testing uses higher speeds and offset side-impact testing. Both are generally accurate within the scope of what they test but since the testing is somewhat different you cannot compare results between the two.

IIHS is more reliable. NHTSA standards are often slow to change to fit current uses.

IIHS uses accidents which more accurately reflect the ways cars are used today, and are constantly updating the methods to get the most reliable results. Since they are actually produce data for insurance companies, they seek the most accurate data in order that insurance companies can accurately assess their liabilities in insuring cars.

NHTSA is a government agency, and as such must be more careful to test every car the same to release a report that has the same basis in fact. The are bound by government restrictions, and when they find their testing methods are out of date, it takes them years to change the standards to meet modern driving conditions.

I work in the auto industry. The main critique of the IIHS is the IIHS goes to the Manufacturer to get the cars for crash testing. The manufacturer provides them with REINFORCED cars. The NHTSA buys cars directly from car Dealerships and crash tests them. They crash test the cars we actually drive!!!
The Federal Government should not allow IIHS crash tests to be printed on new car Monroney window stickers. It is a form of consumer fraud that lead buyers to believe the cars they drive are safer that they actually are.

Unless you are a scientist and actually see the crash tests for your car, it's a very subjective question.

I'd say drive safely, wear seatbelts and make sure you have your auto insurance paid up.

IIHS OVER NHTSA BECAUSE THEY DO MORE IN-DEPTH TESTING IN ALL FIELDS AS OPPOSED TO THE OTHER.
