If so, is it rare? And how?

They can break from many things, getting torn, heat, lots of things. It's not that rare either from the amount of unwanted pregnancy stories I heard. If I were you I would also get birth control too just so you have a backup.

Sure! If you can buy a brand-new Mercedes and 1-2% will have to be brought back for a defect... why not anything manufactured? Although 'break' is the wrong wording, because it's really a defect (already) that you'll never know about... until you discover weeks or months later. By law, there's always info to that effect, on the box at the store. Listed as a small percentage. Gynos will tell you to double-up with something else in addition to the usage, just in case.

They can break any number of ways. Latex is very sensitive to heat so if they've been left in a hot car (like in the glove compartment) the latex will have degraded over time and will break. Also, if the girl puts it on and has nails, she can accidentally tear it. Too much friction, it can tear. Like someone else said, sometimes they'll roll off and then you'll have great fun trying to retrieve the damned thing.

It's not uncommon, but it's hardly an every time thing either. I had one get uh... lost... heh, but never had one break. You're still better off using one than not to protect against STDs, but if you're wanting to prevent pregnancy, the pill is the way to go.

they certainly can break, but putting them on wrong, there being a hole in the condom, them being old and passed the experience date...it's not as rare as you would think. I'd safely say that 5-10% of condoms are not effective at all since they break or are used improperly. Be very careful with them! the best bet is to either wait to have sex or get on the pill.

Yes & no its not rare unless you are using magnums or trojan then yes it is rareI don't really know how but it happens maybe because the condoms are actuallt too small or it has been tampered with & sometimes if the girl puts the condom on the guy & she has long finger nails then that can easily tear a small rip in the condom.

The break for several reasons:

1) the man and/or woman did not put it on right
2) The condomn has been punctured
3) Sex was really rough

**** Condoms are 100% effective when put on right.

Yes they break, I had a scare when I was 17.

Putting on two condoms instead of one sounds like a good idea, but the friction of the two rubbing against eachother will actually make them break easier.

Yes they can break! It's happened to me more than once! And the afterthought is definitely "uh-oh, what now?" It hasn't happened in a VERY long time though! Maybe they're making them better now? lol

I'm not sure exactly why they break - maybe if you're not wet enough, or didn't use lube, it can cause friction which can cause it to tear?

btw - you give some AWESOME answers! ;)

Yes, they can and do. No, it is not necessarily a rare thing. I believe it depends on the quality of the condom. How? Well, gee I suppose it is the weakness of the latex and the pressure of the ejaculation, as well as being stretched.

Yes, they do. It's not common, but it's not unheard of either.

If the condom is old, it can break more easily. If it's been exposed to extreme temperatures, if it's improperly handled, if it's put on wrong... so many things.

Never use lubricants except KY, as other things can degrade the condom quickly and cause it to leak or break.
