Are you sure you don't mean Wormwood? Given the biblical reference that this will poison water, Wormwood seems more likely.
Wormwood is a herb that's used in the making of Absinthe. It is a hallucinogen and in large quantities, it can kill you.

It's Herb - a plant used in absinthe. Poisonous - but also used as a medicine. There are also other things called Wormwood - including a computer virus. I think some of the people answering this question have probably been drinking absinthe or something! lol

It's something that poisons water and makes it undrinkable.
Anyone remember the accident at Chernobyl? I remember reading that Chernobyl actually meant something like wormwood, and it was supposed to be a sign of the end times.

A woodworm is a tiny mite that makes its home in anything made of wood .
Unfortunately they breed quickly so each one must burrow it own lair , as a result the wood in which they live becomes weak because they have eaten most of it away (albeit inside)
Infected wood will be dry and show tiny holes on the surface .
It can be cured with chemicals but weight bearing joists or roof timbers are usually replaced as it is difficult to gauge how much damage the mites have caused .

Ambrosia beetles (Platypodidae, Scolytidae)
Bark borer beetle / Waney edge borer (Ernobius mollis)
Common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum)
Death watch beetle (Xestobium rufovillosum)
House longhorn beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus)

Weevils (Pentarthrum huttoni, Euophryum confine)
