not enough to effect fat loss. walking up and down the stairs is the same as the body being at rest. if you determine your BMR then divide that by 24 and that's how many calories your body burns an hour at rest. divide the hourly rate by 6 and that's how many calories you would burn in 10 minutes of walking up and down the steps.

Stairclimbing/stairrunning is vigorous exercise if you keep up a constant tempo, hence the popularity of Stairmaster a few years back. It's hard to estimate the calories lost because of all the different variables besides the time, your weight and your speed, there's also landings between flights, the number of stairs and the height of the stairs.

I've used the rule of thumb that 10 min = approximately a 30min run, which I've actually tested with a stairclimbing race. Using this rule, I enter the amount of calories into cool running's calorie counter and you would burn about 365 calories.

If you want to get really technical, there's an estimate that 0.3-0.4 calorie is burned from every upward step you take. If you take 90 steps (5 flights), you burn 36 calories. Can you do 90 steps/50 flights in 10 mins? This is an approximation you can use to refine your calorie counting although the variables I mentioned still play a factor.

I used to climb10 floors or 20 flights as a supplement to marathon training. It was nearly impossible to do without breathing heavy at the top. Overall, stairclimbing is an awesome way to sneak in a vigorous exercise when you don't have much time!

it won't do much for you. If you want to get in shape you should run, or hit the gym, and develop good eating habits.
