Theres a variety of ways....exercise, lifting weights, running, sex, talking about your problems with a trusted friend, keeping a journal, those have all been suggested to me

If at all possible, I physically move to another location.
If the problem is at work, I drive home by a slower slightly different route that takes me past a more scenic way. If it can't wait till then, I'll take a short break and get a soda, close my eyes and think about my husband and family--what they mean to me and how they love me no matter what's causing problems at work.
If the stress is at home, I'll take a walk, read a book, call a friend, write an emotional letter and then tear it up. If things are really bad, I'll tackle the closets. Nothing is more mindlessly involving than house cleaning. The more stress, the more cleaning. It may not help what is causing the stress, but the family sorts of melts away not wanting to get dragged into helping. I can't be critcized because I am doing something productive that the others don't want to do. When the projects are done, the stress causing problem may still be around, but I feel better (okay, slightly superior,) because the house is sparkling. And in the time it takes, I have had time to think about how to fix the problem without lashing out at anyone. I have gotten a physical workout and I know that I'll be able to sleep. A good night's rest puts a good spin on the next day.
Last of all, I promise myself a treat when the problem is managable. It may be a glass of wine with dinner, or some chocolate. It may be a movie out. It can be a long distance call to someone I haven't spoken to in a while. It can be anything at all that brings me happiness. When there is a problem, I try to focus on how to resolve it or get past it and get back to my life.

The best way is to relieve it is to avoid it in the first place. This means that you have to be aware of the signs that stress might be coming on and then address the signs so that you don't have to address the stress.

I play a video game called Battletanks. It's a little older, but it's soooo satisfying to crush cars, shoot things, and generally blow things up. Great stress reliever!
