My dog is going to have puppies in a few weeks, and I want to know if we can give them all their shots ourself or if we have to take all of them to the vet to get it done. Also, do we need to take the mother to the vet? Like women and their baby doctors? And how old do the puppies have to be before we can give them away?

We took her to an old friend who is a retired vet and shes the one who told us she was pregnant. She snuck off and mated with the neighbor dog before her appointment to get spayed. We then canceled the appointment because if she was spayed then it would be like abortion if she was pregnant. My grandmother used to use this dog for breeding but we are no longer in contact, so I cant ask her what to do. But I heard of my grandmother giving the new puppies the shots herself before so I just wanted to know. I dont know that much about this sort of stuff, so thats why I came here. Please dont put me down for trying to help my dog be comfortable and trying to save a little bit of my hard earned money.

Newborn puppies are normal with their sleeping habits. A one week old puppy should be sleeping almost 90% of the day! The only time that they should wake up for is to eat, pee, and poop. As for the milk, I'm sure they are getting the nutrients that they need. I'm sure the milk is just fine. If there was no milk that the pups were getting, they would be whining and crying. Good luck with the pups, but remember. Get her spayed as soon as possible. It's costs way less to spay a dog then to take care of the newborns. Oh yeah, as for the more milk part. The only way that would happen is to make her eat more. She should be eating 3-4 times more than she usually eats.

Can you answer these questions?
1)how old should a puppy be when it gets it's first vaccinations?
2)What vaccinations do they need (what are required by law and what protects them from illness)?
3)How do you give the injections? There are different methods for different vaccinations like IM, SQ and IN.
4)Where to the vaccinations go? Each vaccination has a specific spot that it needs to be injected.
5)Do you know what the sideeffects are to watch out for? Even the healthiest animal can have an adverse reaction to the vaccines.
If you can't answer these questions than you need to have someone with experience like a vet vaccinate your pups. You should take the pups and the mom to the first apointment to make sure that she is recovering from her birth properly. It's illegal to remove the pups from the mom until the pups are 8 weeks old. It's better for them to stick around for a little bit longer then 8 weeks to insure that they are getting the correct nutrience.
You obviously don't have a clue what you are doing so after she has the pups you need to get your female spayed. This will happen all over again if your not careful and we don't need any more animals in shelters because of irresponsible owners. Good Luck

I don't know about all their shots, but I do know that in the state of Iowa, only a licensed vet can give the rabies vaccine.
My question is, is why would you want to?
Even if you can give all the shots to them, they NEED to see the vet and so does their mom so you know for sure they are all healthy.
There's also the issue of giving the injections the right way.
Granted, I have a huge aversion to needles, but I wouldn't want to risk harming my dogs just so I could save a few dollars.

Yes you can give the 1st shots yourself as long as you know what you are doing and the proper age to give them. Keep all information about the shot (name ,manufacture, etc) to give to the people that get the puppy so their vet knows exactly what was given and when. You may have to take the mother in to the vet if she has problems delivering and/or to get a pit shot to stop her from contracting/bleeding after she is done giving birth. Puppies need to nurse for 6 weeks and it is best that they stay with litter mates for either 7 or 10 weeks so they learn proper play and etiquette.

1. Yes you can give the puppies the shots yourself. You can buy the shots online at several places. They will be packed in ice. No, you do not need to go to the vet unless you have a sickly mother. Normal healthy mothers have no problems birthing the pups. They will also do the cleanup of the pups. You of course need to keep their box clean. We normally sell or give our puppies away at 8 to 9 weeks. By the way, instructions for the shots are on the bottles and will come with the necessary needles.

No, you can't give them yourself. For one thing, you wouldn't be able to get hold of the vaccines yourself (I hope)
Puppies need to have their first shots at 8 weeks of age, when their maternally-derived immunity starts to wane.
If you haven't already taken your pregnant dog to the vet for a general health checkup, you should do now. It doesn't sound as if you know what yo expect during the birth and when the puppies are born, so you need to find this out NOW. What if she has problems during the birth? How are you going to know if the puppies are healthy or not? Do you know that the mother dog should be fed on puppy food during pregnancy and lactation? Do you know about proper flea and worming protocols for the mother and pups? What are you going to do if the puppies don't feed from the mother?
Pups should not leave their mother before 8 weeks of age, they need to be fully weaned and independent of her. Preferably they should stay with her until 12 weeks of age.
Do make an appointment with your vet so you can find out the answers to the questions above. You also need to know where your nearest emergency vet is - something to find out BEFORE the mother starts whelping, not during.

You can do some of the vaccinations yourself, and its normally ok to do.
Not to be rude, but you shouldnt. You are definately going to want to get both the mom and pups checked out anyway. You also dont seem experienced enough to do it. Do what is best for the pups please, take them to the vet for this.

Since you apparently don't know anything about breeding or looking after a pregnant dog, no. Take them to the vet, take their mother to the vet as well for a check-up. Has she even been to the vet for a check-up while she's pregnant? And they need to stay with the mother and litter mates until they're at least 8 weeks old. These are all things you need to know before you let your poor dog get pregnant!

Yes you can, go to your farm supply store, or CO-OP. They can inform you on what to buy. Also you can call your vet and get them to tell you what they need and why.
BUT...i have checked and to buy the shots and give them to my puppy was 15 dollars or i could take him to the vet and not have to worry about buying and measuring for only 22 dollars. But if you have alot of puppies then yes, it might be best to give them the shots yourself. To me it is worth paying the vet (but i only have 2 dogs). Best of luck to you.

Well now, did your mom give you your vaccinations when you were a baby?
You have gotten good advice already, so I will just add that you need to get mama dog spayed after the pups are weened.
