You should always refer to the Kelly Blue Book for average values of cars. You can do this online also. A few good pointers in buying a car is:
Check the oil before turning on the car. The oil should smell okay (not burnt) and be black/brown and not grey. It should not have anything in it except oil.
Try to get low miles. An older car is expected to have higher miles, but a newer car shouldn't have high miles. A typical year in miles is about 12,000 to 15,000 miles max.
Check the tranny fluid after you let the car run for about 2 minutes. The tranny fluid should be slightly reddish brown with nothing other than tranny fluid in it.
Check the water/radiator. If there is oil in the radiator it's a bad sign.
Also, check around the engine for leaking oil all over the engine.
When the car is running, check for the sound of the engine. It should not tap or have a loud clanking sound.
These items are tops on lists of what to check for in a car. Good luck!!

I didn't have a clue either, but this website helped me with eeeeverything. There's just so much info about buying a car, what car is right for you, what you should pay, etc. Look under the tips and advice area! First decide what type of car you want-sedan, sports, convertable, suv, van, truck? And go from there. If I were you, I'd probably bring somebody with me, like a mechanic or someone who knows a little about cars, who could help look at the cars and help you when you fill out all the info, because you CAN talk them down in prices and they DO try to scam you, especially women! (my ex used to work for a dealership) But good luck

It depends on how much you have to spend on it. A used car with low mileage will be the most affordable and dependable. Any car with over 100,000 miles will soon develop problems. A 2 year old car will have gone down a lot in price compared to the cost of a new one, and will still be dependable. Check for how well it starts up, whether or not it burns oil, overall condition--if it looks like its been taken care of--ask to see the maintenance records [most people who take care of their cars keep these.] Check kellybluebook.com for vehicle value[cost]

Depending on what car you are wanting to buy a good source is Consumer Reports. Also check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for recalls and other frequent safety issues on different car manufacturers and models. Both sources will steer you in the right direction if you want to know about a specific vehicle.

What do you like? What can you afford? And How big of a car do you need? Look at the maintenance cost in a long run, too. There must be something that you have yout eye on?

Depends on what you are looking for. I would look in your local paper, once you find something do a little research. Check out sites like consumer reports and Kelley Blue Book. Good luck!

You will have to give more info, what type of car, sedan, coupe, SUV; do you want foreign or domestic; do you want fuel economy; etc. Give more details in your question

First, make a checklist of what your uses are.
If you run off road, you'll want a 4x4.
If you tow, you'll want a V8.
If you have kids, you'll want a minivan.
If you have kids AND go off road, you'll want a Suburban.
The guesses are endless.
