Trying to plan a honeymoon - but my husband has already been to the Bahamas with an ex-girlfriend. I'm worried he's already had the experience, and seen all there is to see as far as exotic beach vactions go.

How does Hawaii compare to the Bahamas? What does it have to offer that the Bahamas doesn't?

Also, what are some good honeymoon hotels/activities?

Thanks

No Hawaii doesn't compare with the Bahamas...it's much better.

There is a reason Hawaii is called "Paradise". Each island is unique and special, something you don't find in the Bahamas. You get a different feel in Hawaii, it's a much more ancient culture, one of kings, royalty and unique customs. You don't get that in the Bahamas. Both have pristine beaches, great weather and fun things to do. However you have real history in Hawaii, both current and ancient.

i agree with all the other responders. I'm a meeting planner and have extensive experience in both places. I've been to a lot of islands in the Bahamas and the service and cleanliness does not compare with the Hawaiian Islands.

Here are a few reasons why I like Hawaii over the Bahamas:

1.) As was mentioned previously, you don't need a passport to go to Hawaii. It seems like such a small thing but if you don't have it right now, it'll take almost 3 months on a NON expedited passport to receive it.

2.) Safe activities - snorkeling, ziplining, flumin' da ditch (big island), ATV, horseback riding, helicopter tour (blue hawaiian), lava viewing (big island) are all insured and regulated.

3.) Greater options for activities - when you're in the bahamas the biggest draw is the water activities. there ARE land activities as well, but they just aren't as good in the bahamas as they are in Hawaii.

4.) FOOD - the food is absolutely the best. The bahamas has a Fish Fry which is fun but beyond that, the food is only ok. Every year I have an event in Hawaii the first thing they rave about is the food. I don't get the same reaction in the Bahamas.

5.) Weather - depending on when you go, hurricanes have been pretty active in the caribbean over the past 5 years. They do have severe weather in Hawaii as well but it doesn't seem as frequent over the past several years as in the Bahamas.

Here are some hotels that I like:

1.) Fairmont Orchid - Big Island. I had a sense of coming home when I went here. I just loved relaxing on the beach and just doing nothing.

2.) Ihilani Hotel, Oahu. It's close enough to waikiki that you can make the trip in...yet far enough away that you're not bothered by the "Los Angeles" like traffic/city living that is waikiki.

3.) Hyatt - Kauai. Beautiful resort. This is a great place to do absolutely NOTHING. Unwind and relax...enjoy the Garden Isle! (please note it's called the garden isle for a reason...green lushness happens because of the rain fall...)

4.) Turtle Bay Resort, Oahu (northshore). This is a great place to kick back old hawaii style. It's just next to the banzai pipeline and is a wonderful place to be in the "country".

5.) Fairmont Kea Lani Suites, Maui. Beautiful property! great service. This island is a favorite and tends to be priced out higher than the rest of the islands. There's plenty to do...or not to do!! It doesn't have that big city feel that waikiki has.

Here are some hotels that my friends like that I don't necessarily care for:

1.) Kahala Resort, Oahu (formerly Mandarin Oriental)
2.) Ritz Carlton, Maui (over rated)
3.) Princeville Resort (will be rebranded in January 2008 as a St Regis hotel), Kauai.
4.) Four Seasons Hualalai, Big Island. nice property but I just don't think the cost is justified.

Hope this helps!!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but what about Luaus?

Hawaii has it all, the beautiful beaches, great weather, and when it comes down to entertainment you have to do a luau.

We went to Oahu for on our 10th wedding anniversary and didn't do a luau. We went back to Hawaii last year and this time I was obsessed with booking our luau. Both my husband and I were really impressed with the whole experience. Do your homework, though... There's a lot of options and the prices range. It depends on what island you plan to visit...

I would suggest Maui for a first time visitor!!

The Caribbean doesn't compare to Hawaii. Completely different places. I've been to several islands in the Caribbean and I was married in Maui. Hawaii is unbelievable. GO TO HAWAII

And all those are good and don't need a passport to go to the US from the US.
Hawaii is clean and safe.
