laughter is your brain and body's way to relieve tension, that's why people laugh at tense moments, in order to relieve the tension.

Oh...you just described me perfectly. My mother and I both can't be in any serious, silent situations, especially not together. We never went to church together because we would giggle the whole time....and not to be disrespectful. Prayer time always gets me. Funerals are the worse. Nothing is funny, yet I always get the giggles. And as if I'm not feeling enough sorrow, I have people looking at me like I'm the devil incarnate. I try my hardest to stay out of situations like that....yet ANOTHER reason I don't go to church.

Funerals are, of course, sad, but there is also a lot of opportunity for funny things to happen in them.
I was terrified that I'd forget to turn off my cell phone for my grandmother's funeral and that all of the sudden everyone would be hearing my ringtone of "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Monty Python!
Thankfully, I remembered to leave it in the car!

Apart from being an expression of Joy, laughter is also an Expression of Fear and Relief, that the object/subject of fear didn't get to the one who is laughing

Hysteria. My aunt laughed hysterically at her Mom's funeral. She was distraught with grief. People are funny that way...

I do it. It's like your brain gets overwhelmed and can't take anymore, and it doesn't know what else to do. Extreme emotion can generate laughter. Another "inappropriate" response--I cry when I'm angry, and so do most other women I know. It's like we need to cool off.

I NEVER recall laughing at a funeral.
However, I would laugh at a clown in Barnum and Bailey Circus having a heart attack. (you never know if it is part of the act, that's why that would be funny)
