And every time I walk or jog by their house, their dog comes out and chases me. I don't want to cause any trouble, but I don't think they should be leaving their dog unleashed- it's dangerous for me and for little kids.

I jog a lot, and honestly, I want to be able to jog down my own road without a dumb dog coming out and attacking me. I know I could just take alternate routes, but I think it's a little ridiculous that a dog is posing a threat to myself and to younger kids. What do you think?

It bothers me a lot that I can't go for a run down my own road without having to be chased. What should I do about it?

I understand what you are going through. My b/f and I just recently moved into a neighborhood where EVERYONE seems to just let their dogs roam. Owning a chihuahua who likes to try and escape it makes me nervous. I also don't want to cause any problems, but I am tempted to call animal control. It is dangerous not only for you, but for other pets that escape, as well as kids in the neighborhood. I would recommend giving animal control a call, you can always make it anonymous.

The same thing happened to me when I was just a kid. We live in a small town and this old couple had a german shepherd which always laid on the stoop out in front of the house. That dog would growl at me, and act like he was going to attac.
My mom made me go to the store for her and I was terrified of that stupid dog. I started going thru hell to get to the store by going down the railroad tracks and crossing a weeded area and back up a hill. No one believed me. The old couple died and the dog just vanished one day.
Now days, they would not get by with that. They would be forced to put there dog in the house or in an enclosure.
I would report the dog to animal control. This is a legal issue. The dog does not have the right to chase you down the street and carry on. I would inform them the dog is chasing you and if he continues to do so, get a can of mace and a big club.
I am a dog lover too, but that is just ridiculous.

1.You can talk to your neighbor about it
2. Call Animal Control
3. Befriend the dogs (this is a lot of trouble when you're running but sometimes if i'm chased, I slow down and let the dog know i'm not a threat...talk to it, hold out your hand, give it a treat)
otherwise...4. Be the boss, be firm in telling the dog no. Carry a water gun/water bottle or even pepper spray if they are very aggressive.
5. You can bark back at the dogs, i do it all the time and two that usually growl at me and chase are totally freaked when they see me.

Talk to the owners. Tell them that you don't appreciate it.

I had a similar issue, except that I run with my dog. So I'd be running, and this dog would come out and come after my dog, who was leashed, and then it would become a mess.

One day, the owners were outside, and when they saw it happen, they came out, and I explained the situation. I was a little bitter about it, but civil, and reminded them that it was their responsibility to keep their dogs away from me and my dog.

It hasn't been an issue since.

If they don't respect your safety, and their dogs safety, then you'll need to contact animal control or your local police.

I mean really.. What would happen if when the dogs came after you, there was a car driving down the street... There's definitly some potential for injury there...

In most if not all states, it is considered illegal to let dogs run at large, even if the property they are on is owned by their owner. The owner obviously needs to put some fencing up around their yard. Check your state and local laws for more information about this. Try explaining to your neighbor that having his dogs running around everywhere is not only unsafe for the people living in the area, but it's also unsafe for his dogs. Heaven forbid they ran away. This might prompt him to put some fencing up, or leash them, or something to that effect. If he refuses to take any precautions to safeguard his dogs, then you may need to call animal control and file a formal complaint, especially if they are aggressive. Unfortunately for the time being though, you may need to take an altenative route until this issue is resolved.

Wow I can not believe the idiots on this section are saying it is your fault. YOUR dog was leashed....their dog was not. And you say you hit your own dog? See thats doing more than I would have, I had the same thing my Lab was on a leash and a ladies Yorkie came running offleash yapping and attacked my dog and my dog picked it up with its mouth and shook the hell out of it. She came running over panicked and I did NOT apologize and she did not expect an apology...it was her fault for having her dog off the leash. I have no idea what will happened...just wanted to let you know that a couple years ago I had a different account on here and was a "regular". I changed the account and stopped getting on here because the people on the dog section are delusional..this is not a good place to get advice. Hope everything works out for you and your dog...good luck!

i would just approach your neighbor about it....if you have that kind of relationship.
i would just knock on their door the next time that happens and explain to them what is happening.
say
"hi, i'm not sure if you realize this, but since your dogs are unleashed, whenever i jog by they start to chase me. i'm sure they are nice dogs, but it's very scary and intimidating to havethem chase me and it is a bit of a hazard if there are kids nearby. if you guys could leash them, that would be a lot safer and i would appreciate it."

if they tell you to buzz off, then explain to them, curtly, but politely, that if they chase you again, you will have no choice but to contact animal control.

you are totally in the right.

i walk my dog and push my baby in the stroller in our neighborhood and there are unleashed dogs ALL THE TIME. luckily, i just report them to base housing or the military police and that nips it in the bud.
i'm not afraid to tell the owners what i think either! i've told many of them that leashes are good things as i'm walking away.
i don't care what they think about me. they are being irresponsible pet owners and i'm not risking myself, my son OR my dog to some strange dog unleashed.

i don't mess with that.

i hope this helps.
take care.

its against the law, at least here in my state (MA) theres a leash law. call animal control, they will come and talk to the owner. and dont worry they wont just take the dog away, they will probably give him a ticket (yeah! they can do that!) and then check up again on him in a week or two to make sure hes keeping them on a leash or behind a fence. im a dog owner, and youre right! you have every right to run around your own street as you please. not to mention if the dog did attack you or a child that stupid owner would have quite the lawsuit on his hands

I am not sure I would confront the owners directly unless you know for a fact that they are not hot headed. I would go the animal control route or if your location does not have an animal control officer the local police.

You should talk to your neighbor about this. It is up to them though whether or not their dogs are on leashes. You should tell them about the threats their dogs are causing towards little kids and yourself. Also check into the leash laws for your comunity.
