You take the dog to the vet without delay for the proper antibiotics - ear infections are very, very painful.

The vet can help you but if you are not financially able to do this, take the dog to the local animal shelter and ask for help. They can give the dog ear drops which you would use as directed.
Do not use human ear drops on the dog. The measurements are different from dog to human.
Often times ear infections in dogs are from water trapped behind wax. Using fresh Q-Tips, clean the visable wax from the ear but DO NOT go into the ear canal since this could damage the ear drum or rupture it for permanent hearing loss.
If your dogs ears hang down, you can make a funnel collar from the plastic of milk jugs and staples. Just make sure the neck isn't too tight. This will keep the dog from scratching the ear while it heals. You can also lift the hanging ears and bind them up with a hair tie to allow air to get into the ear. This is very helpful!
Good Luck and please take care of your beloved pet.

Ear infections require a vet's treatment. If the dog's ear drum has ruptured from the infection, using anything in the dog's ears without a vet's approval could cause deafness. If the eardrum ruptures and is treated properly by a vet, it should heal up OK. Don't count on your dog letting you know it's ruptured an eardrum - it happened to my dog and all she did was shake her head occasionally.
If your dog suffers from frequent ear infections, please read this article: http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/ears.html
It contains good advice about a good homemade ear solution for prevention of ear problems (only use the solution after the ears are cleared up by a vet - it's for prevention, not a cure)
If you feed your dog a food that contains soy, wheat, or corn it's possible that your dog could be suffering from a food allergy - allergies can cause ear problems in dogs. My dog who used to get ear infections all the time does well on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul - Canidae and Wellness are also good too. A good food, combined with regular use of the solution from the link above, should help.
If your dog continues to have ear problems, you may want to see a veterinary dermatologist (they specialize in skin disorders in dogs, including ear problems).

You take the dog to a vet.
Ear infections are not 'stopped' - they're treated with antibiotic ear drops. These are not available from shops, you need to get to a vet. A simple ear cleaner is also not going to help. You may have other issues going on in there, like ear mites, so you need a veterinary diagnosis before you can know what meds to get.

To prevent one, you can get a solution from your vet. Also, when giving your dog a bath, try not to get water in its ear. This is the main source of ear infections.
If you dog already has one, go to the vet and they can give you antibiotics or steroids to get rid of it. These are usually drops that you have to put in the ear itself. (Dogs don't generally like this.)

Tresaderm...but you must go to the vet to get it. It's cheap and it works. I can't even tell when my dogs have ear infections. I usually find out when I bring them to the vet for a seperate issue. If you know your dog has an ear infection, you must bring your dog to the vet asap!

vet. You can prevent ear infection by cleansing regularly. Dogs have very sensitive ears, imagine how painful it must be.

Go to the vet, don't try to home medicate or pour anything in the ear.
