I have two daughters, and I hate to let them watch love movies with happy endings. When I was a girl I used to watch "Dirty Dancing" and I was shocked when there was no love out there like that for me. Made me really sad and a little bitter. I don't want my daughters to have false hope, what do you think?

I want them to believe in love, just not the happily ever after type that is not true in today's society.

It's okay to let them watch these movies... all girls will long at sometime for love like on the tv. Just be sure to explain to them what love really is and the work that goes into making a relationship work. You can have the greater influence.
You must be a great mom... you really want to make sure your girls are grounded and not lost in fairytales when it comes to life. They should do well having you around!

True love does exist and it can last. Movies are pretend, don't judge your life by the media. That's not very good to do. Think about this, why would you want your daughters to think that there is no happily ever after? There can be, they just have to be taught how to be responible and learn how to deal with lifes every day problems. Sounds like you don't want them to do that. The fact that you were bitter over a movie makes me wonder why? IT'S NOT REAL. Did you seriously think things like that happened in real life? Nobody just breaks out singing or dancing in real life, not for no reason anyhow. You and your daughters need to know that difference between fantasy and reality.

I understand how you feel. I have been very careful about what kinds of things I let my daughter listen to, watch, or read. I don't think girls should even watch anything with romantic relationships until they are old enough to start having those relationships themselves. Also, I think you would be ok to let them watch sappy movies as long as they are balanced with sad ending movies too. Casablanca, Streetcar Named Desire type of movies. and try discussing the movies they watch with them. Watch Say Anything and then ask them if that seems like a good match, and if that is the kind of boyfriend they would want, etc... As long as they understand reality and are only watching the movies out of fun, they will be ok.

-Hey Girl. That is a good question! No, you aren't crazy at all. You are being a little unbalanced in trying to shelter your children from the sad reality of life in today's world. Be balanced, teach them to find happiness in themselves and let the occasional love story make them feel special.
-Dirty Dancing was a great movie! You've got some good taste, girl, whether there is such thing as a happy ending or not!

Just because you never got to dance with Patrick Swayze, it doesn't mean that happy endings are not possible! If I were in your shoes, I would watch the "happy ending" movies WITH your daughters, and explain to them that sometimes things turn out wonderful for people, but sometimes they do not. Your children should not be taught that it's impossible to achieve one's dream.

So you teach them that there is no love like that for them out there? Never giving them the chance that "they" themselves may find that kind of love?
There is nothing wrong with having hope for that kind of love...gives you something to strive for, if its what you want.
You can let them understand that the movie isn't based on a true story. But I wouldn't ever let them think that its not possible for them just because it wasn't possible for me.
You can have anything you want so long as you strive to have it.

Well, In my opinion your not letting your girls learn how to dream no matter how big or impossible it may seem, they need to know that they can dream huge dreams.
