We are all immigrants, with the exception of full blodded Native Americans. This country was founded on immigrants. Almost every person reading this has immigrant blood in their heritage. People left their home countries, came to America for a better life. I am so angry when people say things like "They have no right to be here! They were not born here" Um...it was just chance that you were born in this country. It wasn't like a devine intervention that led you to be an American, and you didn't have to pass a test when you were born in order to claim your citizenship! People in Mexico are standing on their side of the boarder, know that they can make something like 140 dollars that month to take care of their families. But if they cross over into the US, they can make $1500! I would like anyone here to say that they would choose to stay in Mexico under that situation. These people don't have the money to do it legally! We do need immigration reform.

We need to make it easier for people to become US citizens, and then we would not have the problem of illigal immigrants! Most people want to be contributing members of society, but the process is so difficult and costly, they just don't have the money to do it.

I don't think the majority of people are opposed to legal immigrants for the very reasons you stated. Legal immigrants mean people who have applied for VISA's to be here and have legal status in the US. People who are following the laws of the US from the beginning. It requires a certain amount of dedication, persistance and financing up front, but it's a good faith effort. While I understand the situation of people from Latin American and I sympathize with their plight, in their case, they have entered the US ILLEGALLY. They have made a statement by their behavior from the outset that our laws are unimportant to them, persisting in the legally sanctioned process to be admitted to our country is too intolerable to them and they will do what it takes to get here. That doesn't speak highly of them unfortunately.
Yes, we do need to make it much easier for people to cross our southern border on guest worker passes. Those immigrants are actually having a vital impact on our economy by taking jobs a lot of our people wouldn't take. For them, it's a step up and I truly think we should make it easier for them to take that step. But I do not think we should accept them here if the first thing they do right off the bat is break our laws.

Oh brother. Here we go again. Same song, same verse.
The problem is NOT with immigration.
The problem is with ILLEGAL immigration.
Yes, indeed, it would be very beneficial if people did not have to go through so many complications to become a citizen.... BUT!! My neighbors did it, my Chinese American friends did it, my grandfather did it, and all the naturalized citizens in the U.S. today did it, also.
Yup. It's a process. But if a person is committed to becoming a citizen of the U.S., then they need to stay committed to the process. It is not expensive to become LEGAL. It is a waiting process.
Hey, why limit it to Mexico? How about everybody in every country who has no money, just come on over here... screw the legal part and we'll feed 'em all. After all, money just grows on American trees, right?
And yes, dear, that is what the president has been talking about ALL ALONG..... immigration reform....
Pay attention.

Not many people are against immigration - it is only illegal aliens that are spoken out against. When my great grandparents came, they didn't just walk in. They saved for years, then came over on a ship full of small pox, sat for weeks in quarantine, then had to be processed through Ellis Island, showing they knew someone here by giving a destination adress, and showing that they had $25 per person (the equivalant of about $580 today). Then they had to pay and naturalize. They didn't demand anything of anyone. My husbands great grandparents saved their money, and sent each kid (of legal age) over one at a time, every 2 years or so as they saved the $. They didn't have it easy then, either. Yes we all come from immigrants - but most of our ancestors came be the letter of the law, LEGALLY. And, once they got here, they were proud of their new home and proud to assimilate and be Americans.

There is a limit as to how much land a country has and what their resources can sustain. I mean wake up. Uncontrolled immigration is going to be nothing but a sunami wave of people from all over the world. Some with good intentions and some with bad.
But it seems you aren't really concerned about any illegals other than those from Mexico. There's millions of people across the globe that live in worse condition than those in Mexico and have far greater obsticles to overcome than a dip in the Rio Grande. How about 1/2 of the illegal Mexicans leave and we switch them with other deserving people throughout the world. I mean they don't have the sole market on poverty. Well....really.....more than that should leave if we want to be FAIR. And we do want to be FAIR don't we? Just because it's convenient and easy because of location, Mexicans shouldn't have a better shot than those who cannot afford to come here legally AND live further away.
Reform ok.....but amnesty and easy access just for Mexicans and special considerations just for them.....NO.
I didn't have to take a citizenship test like an immigrant does but I did have to take history and government and econ. to graduate from school.
My father fought in WW2 and so did alot of my relatives fight for this country throughout our history. Even though my ancestors came from here as well as all parts of the globe.....we speak English, we fly the American flag only. Our allegience is to this nation. Not Mexico or Ireland or Germany or Poland or Greece or anywhere else.
My immigrant ancestors came here and lived in poverty. They didn't have "public schools" and I was the first to go to college and I had to work and pay my own way through. That's after GENERATIONS of work. No welfare, no freebies.....nothing. Now you want me to dishonor all the work and sacrifice of my ancestors and just hand over everything they fought and died for because some illegal newbies want it? Forget it.

It's easy to be against immigration because it affects others in various ways if they would come to this country legally and wait for due process like everyone else we would not be faced with the problem of minimum wage. People can no longer survive on 6.25 hr in 2007. That's why people are so against it. Do you see anybody fighting to go to their countries. To fix the problem is not to run but fight.

Deidre K. hit the nail on the head; the only error: their EIC at tax time is $4500, not $3200; I don't care if you call me racist, mean-spirited, a Nazi or what; but I detest people that are stealing from my pocket and those people are the illegal aliens nothing but thieves; they are being enabled by people like Cardinal Mahony, Geraldo, Obama, Hillary, John McCain, and countless others who speak on behalf of these criminals; I wonder how loud they would speak on behalf of these thieves if they were living in their neighborhoods, attending their schools, ruining their community hospitals and public institutions; I notice that there was 3 thumbs down to Deidre K's comments; that just shows how prevalent these thieves are; they're everywhere; I wonder if they got free Internet service and a free computer with which to respond to her enlightened comments!!!

Thats not our problem. And if they are making that 1500 they ca nsave it and instead of sending it BACK to Mexico save up for a few months to pay ( Like we have to do when we really want someting!!)The issue isnt immigration it is illegal immigration and all of the money that it cost us.We should not have to comform, if they want to be here they can conform to uS laws and be "proud" of their heritage at the same time, But noooo they want us kiss their a**es and make our country bow down to them because they "work so hard". Big fuc**** deal ALOT of us do! And to act like WE owe THEM? Hell NO , not on my clock!!!

I agree with you. However I think there needs to be some reform in immigration laws as far as who is coming into the country. I believe that there should be in data base that is linked at the State and Federal level to make sure that people who are coming in the country do not have a criminal record or are on some FBI wanted list. Also, checking records in country of origin would be good to make sure we are not letting people in with a criminal record.

The ancestors that came here back when came here LEGALLY - they had to be free of any infirmities and they had to have a job and had to have a little money.
The criminals that are stealing benifits from the legal citizins are doing the opposite. They are poor, sick and have no place to live. Is that the way Mexico treats it's own people ? What a sick country Mexico is - to let their own starve and die - the Mexican govt/ doesent really care.

Immigration is a LEGAL process, what your describing is not immigration at all, its the mexican invasion of this country. Also how dare any illegal alien coming across our border and starting a family, how dare them to put there family in that position of possibly losing the parents to deportation. Blame the parents not the laws of this country.

I was born in the US. I am a NATIVE American. As I see more and more places in my small town being robbed by a "Hispanic" looking male. I am thinking. As the woman who helps these people, tells my out of the 2000+ Hispanics living in my area only 4 are legal. As I watch those who do not pay taxes because they are illegal taking jobs from the many American citizens who used to work those jobs. Please tell me how illegal immigration is good for my area????
