Just like anything else in the world, it depends on how well they are maintained...and by whom.

Aircraft are much more reliable than an automobile. Redundant systems, active traffic management and communication with the management system, built to incredible tolerances, usually precisely designed, (some of Bill Lear's original prints make you wonder sometimes,) and carefully regulated. The operators are almost as closely regulated and managed as the aircraft they fly.
Some scofflaws sidestep their maintenance; sooner or later, they kill someone the same as a guy in a car who refuses to fix his brakes because he can't afford the repair and needs to drive.
Some other scoundrels think they're invincible, typically, they wind up dead and sometimes take innocent people with them. Not any different than doing tricks in traffic on a sport bike you only just bought with your girlfriend on the back.
Some clowns know everything, and do what they were explicititly told not to do despite there being a very good reason for not doing what they just did. Think of people street racing with a positive blood alcohol content.
And, sometimes, the mechanics will cheat, weasel and bugger a customer who doesn't know any better.
Aircraft, if well maintained, properly inspected, and operated by an operator who takes the job of flight seriously and is intimate with his aircraft, are a much more reliable way of travelling than driving.

Almost all aircraft, big or small, are super reliable, compared to car's. If maintained properly. Their engine's are designed for it. Their system's as well. If one goes down anywhere it does make a big splash in the news's. That ignores it is as rare as a Greyhound bus to wreck. By percentage even rarer. If you think about a crash, think about all the thousands of flight's you see take off from any modern airport every few minute's. Yes, anyone can be killed in an air crash. Anyone can be struck by lightening as well. If anybody wants to live forever they should never be born.

Planes go up and planes go down. Sometimes the downs are controlled and sometimes they aren't.
All planes are different and only a few have developed bad reputations. It is generally accepted that the older in years and flight hours the less reliable they become.

Don't buy a cirrus.
Best aircraft (strong, dirable, liveable crashlandable) are Piper and Beechcraft.
Best engine, unarguably Lycomings.
