Usually, summer/winter coat. Cats don't really exercise anyway, and when they do, it is for more food. And during the summer, the cat sleeps off the heat, so you'd expect during the winter it is calorie burning time. It does depend on the cat, I have three, only one shows a strong difference between summer and winter coat.

I would say it has to do with the climate you live in. How cold does it get? Is the cat inside or outside? It can have a lot to do with nature. Survival of the fittest or fattest. Just like a winter coat, extra pounds insulate. In the summer, the pounds are shed like a coat to maintain a regular and cooler body mass.

In winter she also grows a heavier coat, so she probably looks bigger. In spring she sheds that coat, and looks smaller.
