How can moslems justify the practice of such a harsh and unfair law in Nigeria, where as in countries like the U.A.E, these laws are not popular.

The problem with Islam (like every other religion) is that men tend to rationalize the "rules" instead of just following the Quran. You also have to figure in the effects of the culture and traditions of the country that is in question. Allah's laws in the Quran are just and fair, praises be to Allah for this, but unfortunately men have taken these just laws and polluted them with human tradition and cultural influences.

An example being female circumcision practiced in many Muslim countries. It is not in the Quran, nor a legitimate part of Islam, but a cultural tradition, a human invention.

The same problem of human rationalization of the "rules and regulations" in religion applies to Christianity, and Judaism. And I dare say, for all religions and "isms".

The shari'a laws were all put by Allah to help man refrain frm bad actions....
although they may seem harsh,eg:cutting the hand of the thief,
they will protect the community from thiefs,as everyone will be afraid of stealing. This can be seen in Mecca, where shopkeepers can freely leave their shops during prayer times, with not even a single person laying his hands on the items in the shop...
*ALL syaria laws are perfectly FAIR(only people who commit the sin will be punished)
also, they come with specific guidelines,eg: a women who has committed zina will only be punished if 4 men saw her committing it...
however,in some places, the syari'a law is practiced without following the proper guidelines set by Allah...so, they will seem unfair....
p.s--by following the syaria law 100%,there will be a peaceful state...as was seen durng the time of the caliphate of Umar bin Al-Khattab!!!=>

Shari'a Law is taken from the culture, not the Islamic faith. The culture of the peoples in the Middle East extends as far back as the dawn of civilization. Islam only came around 1400 years ago. These laws were in place long before the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) received the Qur'an.

Because its in the QURAN! Please read the QURAN. I have done so and I urge you to read it too. Then continue on and read the sahih hadiths, namely Burkhari, Ishaq, Muslim, Tabari, Abu Dawud and know the history and the formation of islam.
