I have a 1996 crown Victoria Police interceptor. It has 4 Catilic converters in the exhaust system (dual exhaust) which are showing a sensor alert with the engine soon light- I was wondering if I paid to have them removed and put on a custom exhaust system that has NO converters would this improve my gas mileage? I know such a system is illegal, but it’s also illegal to speed so I don’t care about the legal-alities of it.

Please give any input / opinion... thanks I currently get about 23 mpg hiway and 16 mpg city.

Yes, it would improve your mileage slightly. However, if you need a smog test for vehicle registration, you should know it's impossible to pass without a catalytic converter. Also, if you've been found to have removed it, it's up to a $25,000 federal penalty.

removing this device is a federal crime which is more fatal than your state law. it will not improve any gas mileage if it is remove. it will increase higher emission . on a hot day, you will see the brown layer hover in the sky if you stand on top of the high rise building. this dangerous brown color gas is cause by bad catalytic converter. most birds died from this brown color gas.removing converter will have problem breathing if you stand behind the exhaust pipe or other drivers that is right behind you in traffic. also it will irritate your eyes. if you care about the planet and other people health, please do the right thing.

If you change the exhaust system the light will never go off and will never pass emissions test so there goes your tag, Best to fix problem , Try replacing the 02 censer, Then go from there , EGR DPFE and then have the computer checked

Just have high flow cat's put on http://www.metalcat.com.au/
---most reputable shops won't touch taking them off completely since it's illegal and could come back to bite them--not worth the fine. Reduced backpressure of a no-cat or high flow system may actually decrease mileage and torque unless other steps are taken...too many variables to say for sure.
