Hello there,

I have some questions about Islam, if anyone can help me.

I have heard that apparently Mohammad ate meat less than ten times during his entire life. I would like to know if this is true, and whether or not muslims follow his lead on this or believe that they should? It seems that within Arabic culture, meat is a large part of all meals, but why is this if the above is true? Should muslims either not eat meat or limit their meat like their prophet (may) have done.

Also, when muslims use the word mohammad they usually say or write peace be upon him after his name. Is this a requirement? Would muslims prefer if everyone (muslim or non muslim) used the 'pbuh' after mentioning their prophet's name, or is it something that muslims believe only they should do?

Many thanks :)

I don't want to get into the actual ethics of meat-eating, the design of our flat teeth or whether or not plants feel pain, I just would like to what muslims know of Mohammed's thoughts on meat, and how often he consumed it.

I found this link:

http://www.islamicconcern.com/halalliving.asp
http://www.islamicconcerns.com/IsVegetarianismUnIslamic.asp

Is this page reliable? Is the meat industry going against Mohammed's (pbuh) word? Does a vegetarian muslim find themselves avoiding situations that meat-eating muslims cannot in terms of how they interact with animals?

Also finally, the words meat and flesh can also refer to that of a fruit or nut or even other food items? Is the word for meat or flesh used throughout the Koran always referring to animal meat?

Thanks for all the answers so far, it's been really interesting :) I have access to an English copy of the Koran, but I think there are some differences in the translation.

My Friend, The true Muslims follow what is written in the Quran not what they "Think" Mohammed did or said. The Quran states all food is allowed except "Dead Meat, Blood, The Flesh of Swine and anything that has been sacrificed in the name of anything other that God and by using Arrows (Gambling) for division of Meat"

If Mohammed preferred one way or another, it has no consequences on what we are allowed to do or not, he was a human and had his likes and dislikes, the religion is not about ones likes and dislikes ... its about what God likes or dislikes and that is clearly written in the Quran ... so read it and understand what God wants of you.

If you don't like to eat meat .. don't, that does not make you a muslim or non-muslim and if you like to eat meat then eat meat, that does not make you a muslim or a non-muslim.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) never ate any meat that came from a pig, other than that, I have never heard any stories claiming that he rarely ate meat.

The pbuh or SAW is said or written by Muslims out of respect for Muhammad. Non-Muslims can say it if they want, but it doesn't really make a difference.

SAW stands for 'salahallahu alayhi wa-salaam' which is just the Arabic way of saying 'Peace be Upon Him and the Blessings of Allah'

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the most Merciful

Some one has fed you with some wrong Information. There is
no record of the prophet [peace and blessings be upon Him]
having eaten meat less than 10 times or asking the Muslims to do so .Meat was the staple Diet in those days as vegetation was not in abundance in the desert regions.Eating of meat slaughtered in the Islamic way is halal and wholesome. Yes the prophet did advice us to eat moderately and not to fill your stomach with food.

When the Muslim uses the Name Of the Prophet [pbuh ]
Muhammad or any Prophet For that matter or any righteous
dead person we say 'Peace be on Him/ her/ Them and so on.
The prophet[peace and blessings be upon him]asked us to send our blessings and salutations on Him so it is a Highly
recommended act of respect and reverence and a
person may be rewarded for it InshaAllah. We encourage
every one t whether Muslims or Non Muslims to
send their peace upon the Prophet of Islam Muhammad .{PBUH ]

Hi there,

These are interesting questions:

With regards to the Prophet Muhammad (sall'Allahu alayhi wasalam) eating meat only ten times in his life....... I'm not sure where you heard this, but it's not true. For two reasons:

1) There is nothing reported in the books of hadith (reports on the life of the Prophet -sall'Allahu alayhi wasalam) that state anything to this effect.

2) The Prophet (sall'Allahu alayhi wasalam) received the revelation of the Qur'an over a period of 23 years.....so during those years he would have eaten from the sacrificed lamb/camels at the annual Hajj pilgrimage because it is obligatory to perform a ritual sacrifice at the end of the pilgrimage. Also, of the wedding feasts he attended (his own and those of others) he would have eaten lamb then also because it is recommended to provide at least 1 lamb for the wedding feast

There are many reports in the books of hadith of meat being served to the Prophet (sall'Allahu alayhi wasalam). To check it out for yourself, go to the following link and use the keyword search under HADITH ...... type in the word "meat" and you'll find loads of ahadith (plural): http://www.searchtruth.com

In response to your second question: yes, it is obligatory to use the 'salam' after mentioning the name of the Prophet Muhammad (sall'Allahu alayhi wasalam). As you can see I have just typed the saying in Arabic which equates to "Peace, Honour and Graces of Allah be upon him"

Muslim's are commanded in the Qur'an to send the 'salam' upon the Prophet (sall'allahu alayhi wasalam) - If one cannot say it in Arabic then it is permissible to say it in another language, as long as it is equal to the same meaning.

From Qur'an:

"Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (Muhammad) and also His angels too (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation i.e. AsSalamu Alaikum)." (Qur'an 33:56)

I have not heard anything about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) not eating meat much...I'm not sure that is true. He taught that eating meat is fine unless it is haraam.

For muslims it is important to say his name out of respect but we dont go around forcing non-muslims to say it too. I am surprised by your question and I appreciate your consideration :)

well u have heared not the truth there is no limit of eating meet we caan have it as we need to eat.
the quran gives permission to have nonveg but not limit..
O ye who believe! Fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals with the exceptions named."
[Al-Qur’an 5:1]
Non-vegetarian food is a good source of excellent protein. It contains biologically complete protein i.e. all the 8 essential amino acid that are not synthesized by the body and should be supplied in the diet. Meat also contains iron, vitamin B1 and niacinIf you observe the teeth of herbivorous animals like the cow, goat and sheep, you will find something strikingly similar in all of them. i.e. suited for herbivorous diet. If you observe the set of teeth of the carnivorous animals like the lion, tiger, or leopard, they all have a set of pointed teeth i.e. suited for a carnivorous diet. If you analyze the set of teeth of humans, you find that they have flat teeth as well as pointed teeth. Thus they have teeth suited for both herbivorous as well as carnivorous food All these animals have a set of flat teeth i.e. they are omnivorous. One may ask, if Almighty God wanted humans to have only vegetables, why did He provide us also with pointed teeth? It is logical that He expected us to need and to have both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food.
The digestive system of herbivorous animals can digest only vegetables. The digestive system of carnivorous animals can digest only meat. But the digestive system of humans can digest both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. If Almighty God wanted us to have only vegetables then why did He give us a digestive system that can digest both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food?
Certain religions have adopted pure vegetarianism as a dietary law because they are totally against the killing of living creatures. If a person can survive without killing any living creature, I would be the first person to adopt such a way of life. In the past people thought plants were lifeless. Today it is a universal fact that even plants have life. Thus their logic of not killing living creatures is not fulfilled even by being a pure vegetarian.
Once a vegetarian argued his case by saying that plants only have two or three senses while the animals have five senses.
Therefore killing a plant is a lesser crime than killing an animal. Suppose your brother is born deaf and dumb and has two senses less as compared to other human beings. He becomes mature and someone murders him. Would you ask the judge to give the murderer a lesser punishment because your brother has two senses less? In fact you would say that he has killed a masoom, an innocent person, and the judge should give the murderer a greater punishment.
In fact the Qur’an says:

"O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good"
[Al-Qur’an 2:168

O children of Adam! take your adornment at every time and place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not immoderate; surely, He does not love those who are immoderate.

Mohammad ate like any Arab, full of meat and drinks wine. As for your next question, Muslims use it to say "Peace be unto him", but in reality they are mimicking the sound of spitting, like spitting onto Muhammad for inventing islam and causing their lives to be in such a mess.
