Imagine that over the course of one year 1 trillion dollars (~10% national income) were given to Christianity in the United States and was exclusively earmarked to be spent on what churches do. Additionally all 275 million people in the US would spent 6 hours a week participating in a Christian church.

Notes:
a) Remember that ~75% of the US prison population is Christian so the impact on crime would probably be minimal.

b) After examining the budget of three local churches less that 1% of the money could go to helping the poor since in all three cases significantly less than 1% of their budget went to helping the needy. Monies would typically be spent on building churches, Biblical education, hiring church staff etc.

1. What might this produce?

Now imagine the same 1 trillion dollars were spent annually on scientific research and education and that an extra 85.8 billion people hours were used annually for scientific education and research.

2. What might this produce?

1. Preachers would have bigger houses, nicer cars, and even bigger churches. Meanwhile, the poor would still be suffering, the hungry would go unfed and the preachers would still insist on people fessing up their 10% tithe.

2. We might actually catch up a bit with the research being done in the rest of the world, specifically Europe. We are woefully behind ever since GWB entered office and cut our research dollars to fund his war.

The fact that churches are treated as not-for-profits in the eyes of our government, and receive the same tax breaks, makes me sick. Any not-for-profit on the books is accountable for any expenditures made and needs to produce documentation at any time showing what money is going where. Churches are not under the same scrutiny, so who knows where the funds are going to? I'm sure some of it is administrative, like you stated, and I'm sure some of it is...?

If the money that you mentioned, or even what is contributed now through the church's current members, was donated to research causes or to charities the return on investment would be much higher. Get it in the hands of people who really need it and can do something with it.

This is a stupid game. I give more money to research (I give to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the American Heart Association every month) than I do give to a church. I'm a Christian who believes that people are The Church, not a building. I also know that the church I am currently attending gives a lot more than 1% to the needy...we receive reports regularly on how much money was collected and how it was spent. Not all churches are huge cathedrals with expensive stained glass windows, sculptures and paintings.

God Bless.

Considering that billions and billions of dollars already go to cancer research and no gains are ever made there-except for rich doctors and richer pharmaceutical companies, I don't expect to see any significant improvements in our health. Maybe implants and fat-burning products might get cheaper. We could be dying on the inside but DAMN we would look good.

We spend plenty of money on scientific research and on education and both are failing us today.

The churches are failing us today because they tickle the ears of the congregation for money and they fail to teach the Word of God. If you've gone to a church for 2 years, then you've heard 52 sermons twice and maybe 52 Bible verses. These pastors that stand up and preach their stories instead of God's Word teach nothing but a hopeless situation. It is God's Word that is important and nothing the pastor can say about his stories can substitute for God's Word. It is the Word of God that is sharper than a two edged sword. Preach sin and its effects on mankind. Pastors are becoming a stumbling block to baby Christians. The Christians are begging for the Word of God and the Pastor feeds them baby food instead of the meat of God.

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Christians are taught to be humble, so of course for christ's sake they suffer more than any other religious group known to man!

To answer your question history is a part of scientific education, and is actually where the study of the human soul, so they both are of EQUAL importance.
